I just purchased a 1874 Sharps Sporting No.3 Deluxe Rifle 32" .45-70, retail at $4,128.00. It has been on my bucket list for 30 years

Its a Taylor fire arms made by Pedersoli

It was just sitting there on the shelf of my local gun store used in new condition, marked down from $3000.00 to $2,000.00 I had to ask and the seller wanted a new gun, so he accepted $1,800.00 I think I got a good deal.

Now I start reading about the 45 700 and I am in the dark. very dark with advice i have researched all over the place

It will be a range gun for medium distance to start out to 400 yds, I want it to be a fun gun, and dont want to take a pounding to shoot it

to start I dont want to use black powder

Dont want to cast my own

My local gun store has Bear Creek coated bullets 405 grain and 458 diameter, easy so I plan to try some of those

any advice on other comercial cast bullets, I use state Line bullets in my 44 mag. and like them

advice for powder and loads? I have Varget

Looking for a fun light accurate load. I know this can be a really deep rabbit hole, trying to keep it simple to start

Back in the day, I shot lots and lots of 3031 behind 300 grain jacketed bullets out of a Shiloh. I cant recall the exact load but it was pretty mild. Dropped whitetails like a sledgehammer.

37gr of 3031 is a safe trapdoor load so it won't be at you up.you can get some wild velocity using varget but I haven't used it yet. Buffalo arms will have the biggest selection of cast bullets and alloys. 4198 is another powder to try. The one thing you don't need is jacketed bullets or non lead unless your going to hunt in ca, I used to use (and still do) Lyman wheel weight bullets on blacktail and bear,and at td velocity.
Congrats on your sharps.....now you need a .54 cal paper cutter.

I've used varget....but they really do well with 2f swiss.

Clean up is not hard at all when using black powder. Especially in a breech loader. Use 77 grains of Swiss 1&1/2 powder, 500 grain bullet, a large magnum rifle or a large pistol primer.

Use a BACO bore swab between shots followed by a dry flannel patch to dry the bore. It will give very consistant shooting and low ES. Clean up is as simple as three bore swabs a dry patch and done. When you get home simply clean any lead out oil it and done. If you paper patch you can go home and oil the bore and you are done.

You can also buy the cleaning felts and put them on 45 caliber rifle nylon brushes that you get direct from Dewy. Put a felt on the front and pone on the back. Use a derlin rod to push them through.

That kinda of funny as I just bought a Pedersoli 45-70 last Friday and like you I have little knowledge of black powder shooting. Since I can't find any BP I'm going to use the substitute 777. The only brass I could find was Starline at Blue Collar Reloading. This should be a fun shooting adventure.

If you could find some 4759, that would be great in your Pedersoli, but hard to find since it has been discontinued for quite a while. 5744 might work as well. My cast run at .460". A powder coated .458 MIGHT work. Been playing around with Unique for 300's to 425's. Might not be fast enough for 400yds for you

If you are loading the 45-70 for 400 yards and beyond, it will thump you pretty good.

im using 5744 under 350gr berrys
it works for what i want so far

3031 will work just fine as will 5744 which is what I used when I first started out. Black powder takes a little more work to manage fouling but is required for certain rifle matches. The main problem with black is it's not readily available unless you buy it by the case. I'm not sure who is selling cast bullets as I've always cast my own. Buffalo Arms may be worth giving a call to.

Google commercial cast bullets and you will find many to check out, as far as dealer/sellers of such.
many of the reloading books show start/max loads for the 45-70 and powders to try or use.
Hornady Reloading Data site on your PC will also show 45-70 loads, etc.

a lot of suggestions for powder, most are not available, 5759,5744, unique, and several others that are not available

I can get 3031, and varget, still trying to stay away from the black powder and substitutes. at least to start

I have looked a little more closely at the sights and don't think they are the ones offered as stock

The front is a globe sight with inserts and a bubble level

the rear looks like a rifle long range Soule Creedmoor. windage adjustment knobs micro adjustable

It also appears older than the rifle, and much more used. The mounting holes do not exactly match the rifle and have been filed to fit. still in very good condition.

It also has an adjustable aperture on the eye piece

Is there any way to determine exactly what it might be.
