Taylor firearms Pedersoli 1874 Sharps

I just came up with a nice mild load with varget. Using 405g Remington bullets shoots really good on my Shiloh sharpes and win 1885. Around 31grains.

Almost moa accuracy, I like it. Haven't chromed it yet but I'm guessing 1250 or 1300

I picked it up yesterday. Sighted it in
Poor set up for the bench. To low and had to hold the but on the point of my shoulder

Ordered a leather recoil pad

Can you share your load
Varget is one of the powders on my list

I was using 25g of 2400 with cast 405g bullet from bear creek

I shot 40, 41,42 and 43 grains. With a CCI 200.

All four shot good, 42 imo shot great.

That's varget and 405 Remington bullets.....still haven't chromed it. But I just yesterday picked up a Browning 1886.....so I'm gone do some loading and go to the range soon.

Thank you hadgons data show 1390 fps with 40g Varget out of a 24 inch barrel

Was your first load at 31g varget. Well below the lowest listed

My barrel is 32 inch. I'll be curious to see what the cronograph shows

With 405 gr cast, use 13 gr of Uniqe, I just shot that load all the way to 800 yds the other day using a CPA rifle. I shot a 4 inch 3 shot group on a dinger at 600 yds, calm day. This past week I was shooting 12.5 gr of Unique, with 550gr Postell all the way to 750 yds.

I've shot a lot of .45/70 in a Shiloh. Black powder always works best. If you don't want to cast your own bullets, check with Buffalo Arms for pre-cast. With out too much trouble you'll be able to shoot easy MOA groups. 2 moa at your 400 yards. I've shot the Shiloh out to 1200 with a duplex load of 7 gr RL7 under 60 grains 2F Goex. Little known fact...black powder cleans up much more easily than smokeless. 3 wet patches and you're done. Buffalo Arms is an excellent supplier for single shot fans.

I got some range time today, working on loads and powder

405 bear creek hard cast coated

The powders I used

2400 from the old lyman book
25g
avg 1434
SD 4.93

Win clean 244
244 is Winchesters replacement for 231 and is nearly identical in burn rate
gmdr.com has data for the 231 powders
They are both very close to unique in burn rate but are denser I did not use a filler

This is a very low volume powder and without extreme care when loading a double charge would be very easy and hard to see

??g
Avg 1145
SD 5.51

Norma N202
This is where I went out on a limb. I have used N202 in other calibers when I could not get varget, I was able to get a few lb. It is very close to varget in burn rate, just slightly faster

I will not say what the load was and I would not recommend following in my footsteps

avg 1339
SD 45, Highest of all my tests

I had 4 rds left after crono and 25 yd sighting so moved out to 100 yds and at a 6" piece of wood, it kicked it up 3 out of the 4 shots still with the 25 yd zero

For the powders I used all of the velocities were nearly exactly where I expected, with no signs of pressure on the primers all easy extraction

244 is my go to pistol powder,I use it in .38. 357 ,44 spcl, 44 mag 45 acp and 9mm,
based on data for Unique, and 231 I think I will be working with it a lot for light plinking and target loads.

It also has a very low recoil

I will say that using a post sight with 80-year-old eyes is not a good way to get moa groups, even at 25 yds it was hard to see exactly where the post was on the bullseye.ds I'll be looking at the ring reticles before my next range day
