The Sightron SIII 45x45 is a great scope at a good price. The only take away is the parralax adjustment and this can be rectified with a 3D printed add on wheel.
Yesterday by chance, I just went to ebay and typed in Burris 8-32x44. To my surprise 3 were
up for sale for $499 or Offer. One was described as a "circle plex" which told me the seller wasn't familiar with the scope. That is called a "peep plex" with medium fine crosshairs and a very small "peep circle" in the middle,
I know because I have 3 of them and they are Great in my estimation., plus the seller
offers returns and all Burris scopes have a lifetime warranty if nothing has changed.
I bought my first one from a guy that was retiring from competition shooting at the time and said it was "The Best Target Scope" he had ever owned.
No guarantees from me other than what I've stated but I'm thinking somebody is going
to get a good scope for a bargain.
One really nice thing is that you can see the target and center it without blocking it out
at all.
I see too many variables with your explanation to blame it solely on too low magnification
but if you have found a combination that works for you more "power" to you...no pun intended.
I was simply saying this model scope has performed very well for me after owning 3 of them, that I would recommend them, and the "peep plex" is very unique and virtually
impossible to find in any of the modern scopes.
I did end up doing a scope swap between the 2 rifles and since doing so my scores for the past 3 weeks have jumped dramatically. On avg. right now of 55 points per week.

Even though the Helos is a bit more expensive than the Argos, it may not have been the upgrade you intended due to the reduced top end magnification (24X versus 34X). Your description of the targets in your matches suggests to me that assuming comparable glass quality, higher magnification might be of benefit to you for shooting tighter groups. The results of your scope swap test are consistent with this notion. Maybe 24X just isn't sufficient mag for your eyes to shoot as tight as you can with scope that has a little higher magnification.
There are many features including image clarity and brightness, turret adjustment range, turret repeatability, magnification range, having a reticle well-suited to the type of shooting for which the scope will primarily be used, weight, etc, that are all important considerations in a scope purchase. All must be weighed and a choice made that fits within the user's budget. More importantly, the relative value of each feature must be weighed according to the user's needs. In your case, I suspect having a top end magnification of at least 32-40X, a relatively fine reticle, and 1/8 MOA turret clicks would be beneficial for the type of target shooting you intend to do.
FWIW - as far as I can tell, Athlon sell only one scope that satisfies the criteria I listed above, and it is currently priced similarly at EuroOptic to your 8-34 MRAD Argos. It has a 30 mm main tube like your 8-34 MRAD Argos. I personally would like the dot reticle of this scope very much for your intended purpose, but only your eyes can tell you what works best for you.

I own a couple Athlon scopes and I find their glass remarkably good for the price. To see what other options might be available, I would suggest visiting one of the following Optics websites:
Optics, scopes, & more for the precision marksman and serious hunter - Nightforce, Swarovski Optik, Vortex, Sako, Leica, Blaser, Tikka, Trijicon, & many more.
Expert advice and unbeatable deals on the premium sporting optics you've been hunting for! Rifle scopes, binoculars, spotting scopes, range finders, and more...

Once you get into the Riflescope sections, you can set the desired features and let the website show you the available choices. For example: 30X and greater magnification, 1/8th MOA turrets, price range, etc. Whatever features you think you might want can be used to get a better idea of what is out there and how much it might cost.
Another approach would be to look at what scopes are available here in the classifieds. You might be able to get a little more "value" or better features in a used scope. The key here is just to find out what's out there so you can make an informed decision.
Thanks folks. From what I am experiencing the Helos was either the wrong optic or there is something wrong with it. Or both. Since I swapped the scope my targets have improved greatly. I believe it is the reticle more than the magnification as the past three weeks we have been shooting at 100/200/300yard ranges and I have found I like the 20X setting the best at all distances. Which again at 20X the crosshairs in the reticle are much finer and not having the distraction of the jumpiness at max power.
Ned I have looked into the Athlon Argos 10-40X56 but some of the reviews about this scopes clarity at the upper end is a little worrisome. Right now I just wish this scope were MOA and not MRAD. 1/8 MOA would be even sweeter!
My personal experience has been the complete opposite. Competing in a local range league using this Argos scope just last week I finished 5th out of 17 and many of these shooters are using optics much more aligned to benchrest shooting than this Athlon is . I also am not on the same level as these guys in experience or equipment.
if you have movement a higher power scope will show it, I have high powered scopes and it shows that I have movement, and that put's me out of competition because I cannot keep the gun on target good enough shoot the full potential of a rifle, my movements are small maybe .050 to .100 sometimes and I can see it sometimes it's more maybe .150, I have shot many small groups in the .1s and a few 0's but it's very few and far between these days but I still have fun trying if the scope shows you moving then we must be in the same boat. oh well we can have fun
@KMW 1954 I participate in such local matches at 200m and 300m on a regular basis. They are not that easy because usually you are not allowed to use rear bag and 10-ring is about 0.5 MOA. From my experience you need at least 40x power scope. In my view the best value for the buck is currently Delta Stryker 5-50x56. Sightron SIII is also a very good option for the money.
