Target backer

I am looking for a target backer that I can staple targets to that will let the bullets tear nice little holes in the paper. It sits outside in the elements year round so it needs to hold up to that. I've used plywood in the past and when a bullet hits it, it splinters and tears a big hole in the paper. I hung some mdf board today thinking it won't splinter. It was worse. Cut nice holes in the board but blew out the paper.

What's everyone using that they're happy with.

Here's the mdf

Try some targets with the rag paper ,,,like regulation NBRSA/IBS targets,,,,once you shoot a few groups (staple the targets in the same place every time,,,use magic marker to locate the edges,,)the plywood will be gone and the bullet will pass thru nothing but the paper,,,,Roger

This is what we use at Williamsport. They hold up very well considering the amount of holes we punch thru them. Plastic Cardboard

We dont use staples. We use push pins to hold up the targets.
Nice neat holes are very important to us. Win or lose by a .001 of an inch in group size cant be measured with a ragged out of shape hole.

Cut a hole in your board then staple rubber inner tubes over the hole. Its what most registered matches do and your bullet hole will be very visible

You could go on the main subject site and print out free targets that you can print to a heavy card stock. That may help on the tearing.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have corrugated plastic sheets. I'll try them over the plywood with a hole cut behind most of the target. I had never considered the inner tube. That seems like it would work good too.

Thanks

I print my targets on card stock then staple that to a piece of corrugated plastic. Works great! Then I use a 3 hole punch so I can keep the target in a binder.

Hard foam insulation works great too and makes for a nice clean hole. I use galvanized nails for holding the target on to the foam. The thicker 1.5-2" works best and lasts about a year for each 4x4 section.

I don't cut the hole. It will eventually form after thousands of rounds if the perimeter is not shot out first. If it's at your own range, fasten vinyl soffit J channel to a wood frame to hold the top and bottom of the backer and simply slide the coroplast sheet in and out....really don't need a secondary backer.
FWIW, here in IBS country in NE Pa, we use homosote as the target backer.

With all the elections coming up there will be lots of the corrugated plastic campaign signs for the taking. If its a candidate that is likely try and take my 2nd amendment rights I don't even wait for the election to take place. They work well for archery target backers also.

Corrugated plastic sheet is hard to beat. I team that up with targets printed on 67# paper This makes about the best combination I've found.

those real estate, open house, and politician campaign signs are good backing!! might get lucky and have someone (thing) on the front side you want to shoot....
cheers,
Doc

Nail or screw a truck mud flap side ways on a wood frame. On my personal range I have frames out to 400 and they have thousands of rounds threw them. They can even take 50 cal reasonably well. Weather impervious. Hold staples well.

I mostly use coroplast for my personal stuff as it's free (thank you political folks).

At the few local ranges I shoot at, they use plain ole black celotex sheets and they hold up quite well.

On OSB plywood, the cheapest way to avoid hole tearing is to use a sheet of simple box cardboard between your paper target the the plywood. Staple cardboard to the plywood, then staple your paper target on top of the cardboard.

Corrugated plastic sheet is great, but only if you have a cheap easy source for it (I do not). It's surprisingly expensive to buy.

Funny, some reason happens around here too.
