Tannerite

I can do this from 250 to 600 yards. What range you recommend for three pounds?

as long as it is in a plastic container and has a free release of the pressure 3 pounds at 200 is safe,,if you contain it in anything steel you could get shrapnel from long ranges,,,,

I dont think it will go off with a fuse,,it takes an impact of like 2000 fps or so,,

Never used it before. Tomorrow is a big celebration. How much do I need? I'm so happy that the hater in chief is gone!! Even happier that Hillary is history!

Be careful! I deal with explosives professionally, and that stuff is serious. Make sure you have plenty of standoff and stay behind a barrier to protect yourself from fragmentation. if it doesn't ignite give it about 30 mins before approaching it.

I would limit it to 5 to 10lbs max. It's relative effectiveness is half that of TNT. For your benefit please see what RE factor stands for.

"The relative effectiveness factor, or R.E. factor, relates an explosive's demolition power to that of TNT, in units of the TNT equivalent/kg (TNTe/kg). The R.E. factor is the relative mass of TNT to which an explosive is equivalent; the greater the R.E., the more powerful the explosive."

So TNTs RE is 1, and tannerites RE is .55. Tannerite has half the strength of TNT. BUT to put it into perspective, ammonium nitrate, which is the sh*t in AFG that's made from fertilizer, RE factor is .42. The norm for their IEDs is usually 40lbs and that small amount destroys our MRAPs!!!

Moral of the story Have fun but be safe and use common sense.

Just an FYI guys, I had a neighbor (operative word "had") that used to set this stuff off all the time. One evening he turned a real boomer loose and blew out all the windows facing his direction and cracked 28' of foundation in my house from about 300 yds. away.
He is now residing in a prison in an adjoining State. :D
Thanks,

Lloyd

One of my mentor kids set off 10# attached to a big Pine tree a few years ago, blew the 38" tree in half where it was attached to the tree and rattled my windows from about 2 miles away. Can not buy it in NYS anymore..
100 yards away is safe, I do 1#'s of it a lot...

We did a 2 pounder of Tannerite. Shot up some clay birds first just to get everyone's attention. That braked 06 barks pretty loud. My wife did the honors on the Tannerite. It was a "blast". Thinking we should have done 4 pounds though seeing as how no one called the Sheriff!

put a pound in a dead groundhog once, sat him up with a stick and took a newbie out with my super fast ultra blaster rifle with "special" bullets...he spotted the groundhog right away...shot him good off the bench.

we got kicked off the farm, but it was worth seeing his reaction to the power of my special bullet..

That right there is hilarious!!

As a matter of fact, I pulled up the video of the splosion where the drum lid almost got us. My grandson did the shooting, and I ran the camera. I was wrong about the amount of tanerite. It was three jars (8 ouncers) not three pounds.

I tried loading it on photobucket last night to share it, but it was too big or sumpthin.

That guy who blew his leg off with three pounds at forty feet, --- well I guess he needs to practice his marksmanship so he can get a little further out. jd

Can I set off the whole 20 pounds in one stroke?

Questions like this scare me just a liddle :)

Of course "you can".....just mix it up and shoot it. It'll go off.....BUT.

Please understand that in most neighborhoods a single POUND will bring police.....this is HE, not a toy. It shatters rocks. I keep 20-30lb on hand (an make it in bulk as needed) but I'm pleading with you TRY A SINGLE LITTLE BOTTLE before you torch off 20lb! We MOVE stuff with ANFO, we SHATTER stuff with "tannerite." I've broken boulders 4ft diameter into manageable hunks when I didn't have a machine on hand....I knocked the tops off of maybe 10 volkswagen sized bones in my yard by shaping it in sandwich baggies and shooting the bags..... Even though we sometimes detonate it with Acetone Peroxide or PETN, it's fast enough that you can shape it and direct it even shooting it with a 22-250. What this means is......"when you shoot a bag of this powder with a 22-250, it detonates so fast that the bullet is destroyed and DOESN'T AFFECT THE SHAPE OF THE PILE." While blasting these same rocks I got lazy on one rock, didn't probe it well....."assumed" it was kinda' round.....and one side wasn't. The shock wave impacted a buried 1" water line 60ft away and wrecked all the pressure gages in my well house.

You will feel the wind pluck at your shirt from 1lb at 100yds on a still evening.

I can and do shoot 50BMG's on my property day or night and have never had a neighbor complain.....nor even notice. I live on the end of a mile long private drive a mile from a working rock pit and have gotten the pit in trouble for "blasting outside of business hours" with calls from neighbors 2 miles away when doing spherical 3 pounders of Tannerite..

Also note that as a noisemaker, the Inverse Square Law is in charge....."BOOM" is more a function of placement, air conditions and size of the environment than size of the charge. I've had one-pounders make everyone cower while in another setting a 10-pounder isn't impressive. Directing the "sound" is paramount. Some friends of mine touched off a 20lber on a mountain peak 12mi line of sight from a town near me while other friends watched from Starbucks...they heard it, saw it and the folks near the blast who set it off complained "it was weak".....yet it made the local paper in a small town 6 miles the OTHER side of the mountain.

We were putting on a fireworks show once and 2lb suspended spherical charges from 100yds out started clearing the shelves on the garage wall......gallon cans of paint falling, bursting and splattering acros't the potluck tables....

Atmospheric conditions.....evidently the air was fat that nite....

And always remember the cardinal rule of HE....."if you can see it, it can see you!"

Don't be these guys:
Blew up a dump truck box, set off the seismic alarm at the nearby nuke plant.

As long as you're using an amount under the threshold that is not for destructive purposes and to only make noise, you are walking a fine line. Once you use,,, 20 lbs as an example... to destroy something you have crossed the line and could find yourself in prison.

Anyone who respects their rights under the 2nd Amendment and wants to continue to enjoy then would be best advised to stay clear of that material.

Fertilizer is very legal and can be bought anywhere. Use it for a destructive device and you could end up like McVeigh.

Blowing up things in the USA, even with common chemicals is very illegal. Don't get caught.

Thinking that if you saw it on youtube, must mean it's legal is dangerous for you and anyone near you.
The minimum safe distance for 1-27 lbs of explosives is 300m.....it goes up exponentially from there.

Well said.

Another Tannerite incident in MN with tragic results.

The victim was not involved, beyond being an invited guest at a party:

ARENDAHL TOWNSHIP, Minn. (WCCO) – A bachelor party near Arendahl Township in Fillmore County turned deadly Saturday when a man standing behind a shooter was hit with shrapnel.

The Fillmore County Sheriff’s office says Jeffrey Taylor and his sons were invited to the party, where people were shooting at explosive targets made of Tannerite.

Sheriff Daryl Jennsen said metal objects exploded with the Tannerite, sending shrapnel flying. A piece hit Taylor in the stomach. He died minutes later.
“The tragedy is that someone lost their life, and to make it worse, of course, is the fact that the victim’s sons were with him,” Jennsen said. “And of course it’s the day before Father’s Day. So it’s just a horrible tragedy....”
