Tanner free rifle

One thing not pointed out in the review of this astoundingly beautiful Tanner is the off set sight system. Very unique and all TANNER.
I have been lucky enough to examine 2 300 m Tanners in .308 and one Tanner .22 Smallbore gun. All are exquisite and by now it is no secret that I lust after them.

Good point Roy about the offset sights. At the very end of the article we do have a muzzle shot with the sight attached. Here you can see the offset very clearly.

Also if you look at the stock itself, you can see the quality of the wood that is used. Very highly figured buttstock. A walnut blank of that quality could run $200-$300 by itself.

Yes, this rifle is beautifuul !
But, if I recently saw two Tanners about one or two years old, which the same beautifule woo and a little differenc for the cheek opiece which has become like a saddlepiece, adjustable on the top of the butt, I also saw one which was a mounterd on a light plastic blue stock with just an adjutable butt plate, exactly like the ons used by many ISSF competitors, and ths one was light enough to be shot in stanfing position. I do not know wetehr it is just a Tanner mounted on a stock from somewhere else or if its the new way Tanner is isssuing his rifles !
Anyway, the trigger system has not changed at all !

Putting offset sights is, I think, made to allow the scope to be mounted and two factors have to be considered :
- the base of front sight is not in line with the scope when one scope is mounted ;
- the little thickness of the steel above the bolt is not very well adapted to put solid screws for a sight or a rail for a scope ; then, the scope's rail and the rear site are mounted on a rail which is part of the action, on the left side of the action, at a place where the walls of the action are thicker.

The reason for the offset sights, is to alow the shooter to get behind the rear sight with a natural head position without canting the rifle to much in the prone position! It has nothing to do with getting in the way of th escope!

Be carefull of Tanners sometimes as some series have soft bolt lug recesses which can cause probs with the functioning of the bolt. Several of my fellow shooters in the Belgian national team,300 m prone) ran into problems with them up to the point that during some 60 shot matches they were unable to openthe bolt, very annoying during a 75 minute match

Soft bolt lugs, hunter very surprised, I have shot with 5 Tanner rifles, standard and free rifle .308W and 6BR since 1983, about 300,000 shots and never had problems with soft lugs nor my teammates
I wonder how the Tanner shop in Switzerland commented on the incident
