Talk to me about 30 BR

Regarding the 30BR, the sole negative attribute is recoil . . . and THAT can be quite subjective. For a bloke such as I, used to shooting 10.0 Lb., 30x47HBR chambered Hunter Class Rifles, even a LV/Sporter weight rifle free-recoil (10.5#), "is like a paid vacation". o_O Jager's post - #6 above - pretty much encapsulates it. The, "table manners", pointed out by Al Nyhus, become either an acquired skill, or, a detriment.;) RG
We don’t have a lot of HBR shooters out on the left coast anymore, but used to shoot a lot of it back in the day at the Richmond Rod & Gun Club. I remember those 30x47, 30x44 imp etc.
If memory serves we used to shoot a lot of 135-150 gr bullets and they had a fairly good recoil.
Course the guys shooting the .308’s thought we were a bunch of sissies

Ya know how it works. You give a little to get a little. But, your correct. My best 30 barrel is at about 7500 rounds. I wish I could shoot to its potential. I shot it several weeks ago at a match for the first time in several months. Took the first 2 targets to get comfortable with the recoil.

And just think.....That shoulder of yours is going to be another
year older, shortly !! LOL Running out of my 7mm Sierra bullets
that are no longer made. Thinking then maybe necking up the
ELF and try one of those 3 groove barrels. I could just go 30BR
but, Naahhhhh.....

I can't count myself as an expert, as I only shoot mine casually. But it seems like the .30BR is very reliable. More so than other chamberings, you can kind of just shoot what everyone else is shooting and it will be very close to optimal. That has been my experience at least.

What makes it special, in part, is the fundamental ballistics. The geometry of the short fat bullets allows for very slow twists and extremely high accuracy potential, which makes for a very forgiving round. Theoretical sensitivity of of a .30 BR bullet to accuracy destroying aerodynamics is lower than even a typical 6mm BR bullet. I've written software that calculates this factor, and the single best bullet I've tried it with in any caliber is the BIB 112. That's not to say a .30 BR will outshoot a PPC - there are obviously other factors. It's just an indication of why the .30 BR is so special.

As far as recoil goes, it depends on the person. I think recoil on a 30BR feels like a 30-30 but that's me. Before I got into the score game I was always into hunting rifles that I guess you would call big boomers and I owned quite a few of them so to me shooting a 30BR is like shooting a pop gun. My 30x47 to me feels like a pop gun. Like I said I'm one of the lucky ones who was never bothered by recoil except one time when I shot my 460WBY off a bench. BIG MISTAKE.

When I load tested my .416 Hoffman off the bench I found a 25 lb bag of shot behind and over the butt helped immensely!
Some rifles are just meant to be shot offhand.;)

I am buying a rifle. My purpose is to experiment with SR BR. There is a 6mm barrel on the rifle but there is another barrel, 30 BR .330 ND.

I don't know anything about 30 BR except it is used for score BR.

What's it all about?
The #1 most important acquisition is wind flags or some kind of reliable wind indicators....without them you'll never realize the full potential of you and/or your equipment. Even tuning will be very difficult without flags.
Without wind flags, you're just pulling the trigger and hoping.
Good luck and stay safe.

That's a point worth making. :)

Too often, competitive shooters make the assumption that the basics we take for granted are in place and being used....wind flags being the biggest one.

Good post. :) -Al

Yes - after shooting PPC's for many years, having the scope slide back and touch my shooting glasses on each shot with the 30BR provides nothing more than a slight distraction - but those distractions count.
