30 BR varmint round?

Has anyone tried to put together a 30 BR varmint rifle. I was looking at the 30 BR and thought it would make a good mid range (out to 600 yards or so) varmint rifle. Hornady makes the 110 V-max, and Nosler makes a 125 grain ballistic tip. I don't know how the BIBs and other high end bullets work on varmints but someone must have tried it.

What happens to when a heavier bullet is loaded onto of the 30 BR? Say, something in the 150-168 weight?

I am glad that you started this thread. I have been wanting to learn a lot more about the 30br. A friend and I have been tossing around the idea of building a 18-20" barrel gun to haul around on the farm. Hope some people with better reply.

The 30 Br would make a good varmint round out to 600. I know some guys that shoot then in 600yds benchrest and do very well. You would need to stay with light bullets, to open up on varmints.

The 30 br will shoot the heavier bullets if the barrel tw take it, but the heavier bullets are made for big game, or will be moving too slow to open up.

I have never shot mine at a varmint but I have a 30 BR and started trying the 125 gr ballistic tips because they would give me a little better BC than the 116 gr Euber that I normally shoot.
My best groups are in the .2 area with my average groups in the high 3s.
My load is 32.5 gr of H4198. Lapua brass, turned for a .330 neck. CCI BR4 primer with the bullet .10 off the lands. I am getting 2880 fps, which should be more than enough to stop the meanest most dangerous PA ground hog.
Good luck!
Bob
P.S. You may get more responses if you move this thread to the 30BR section.

ill be using mine this year to pop them pesky coyotes,, out of the benchrest stock and into a HS Ill keep you posted on how the 110 vmax bullets treat them...

great info so far, lets keep it coming!

mason, i wam really interested in how your 30br works on yotes wiyh the v-max. please keep me informed.

i did originally post yhis in the"big stuff" section as well. check there for more discussion, some responces there too.

I do a lot of varmint hunting. I would not like to hunt varmints or predators with a 30 br out past 300 yards. Just way to much drift and drop with 110 vmax or the 125 ballistic tip.

30 BR 110 Vmax at 3100 fps at 500 yards w/200 yard zero drop is 47 inches and a 10 mph wind moved the bullet 32 inches. That is way to much for me. A 6mmBr would be much better and even the 20 BR I shoot is greatly superior.

Just my 2 cents.

figure the drift/drop on a 155 SMK@2650.... doable with 35.9 grains of H-4895 according to Sierra.
