Talk to me about 1911s - which brand/model?

For me, if I had to only have one then it would be a Colt. Either pre 70s or at least a series 70.

Kimber was great but they had issues for a while. Ones before the 90s were very reliable and well fit. I shot a few that were early 2000’s and had issues. I haven’t handled one in a long time

For nicer over the counter, I’ve been very happy with my Dan Wesson’s

If I was going higher, I’d be giving a serious look to Alchemy

Any higher than that and I’d be talking with a smith like Greg Derr or Karl Benning

I dont own a 1911...

Id like to get one to shoot for fun... however I'm trained/battle hardened to glock... so a glock is on me 12-14 hours a day most days. Which is fine, im a glock guy, always was.

What brand is the go to for 1911s? There's tons of brands... I know some have better tolerances, better machined, better triggers...

I've heard the more they break in the better...

Whats yalls opinions on brands? I dont know much about 1911's to rank anything...
The pistol you buy would depend on how you define fun.
I bought a double stack Para Ordinance back in the early 90's and shoot +P loads.

I really like Les Baer but his prices have really started to climb. They all have I guess.

It all depends on what your goal for the weapon would be. I have a couple of Kimbers I bought quite a few years ago. One is a double stack, match pistol. The other is a commander size. Both have been very reliable, function well, and are accurate. I wanted a full size single stack and ended up picking up a Rock Island Ultra. For around $650, it has an adjustable rear sight and a fiber optic front sight. Hard to beat for the money, and came with G10 grips, a magwell, skeletonized trigger and hammer, and a high beavertail grip safety. Many of these features come on the expensive custom maker guns. Not to say it is the equivalent of one of these, but it is much nicer to shoot than a standard G.I. style 1911. You can get a very nice shooting 1911 for reasonable money. If you want the custom maker offerings, they are excellent, but, will set you back $2,500-$3,500, or more. I shoot casually, and have a plate range in my back yard, so the RIA has been great. I do like the 5", over the commander size, and like all steel 1911s.

I would have no issue buying a Kimber, Ruger or Springfield Armory 1911. I was just surprised no one had mentioned LB. I also have a Kimber 9mm that I have shot the ever loving crap out of. I did put a Kart barrel in it and replaced a couple mim parts. The Firing pin blocking gizmo broke and I did not replace. It was a MIM part. I can not say for sure how many rounds went through that Kimber but it has been well over 40K..

If Dan Wesson would put an external extractor on the 9mm pointman, it’d be 10/10 instead of 9.75/10.

I think Springfield is way too close in price to DW

Really like my Kimber stuff. I understand that they are crawling out of the hole they were in, restoring their name by putting out stuff that runs and is innovative. Since they moved to Alabama or Georgia or whatever.

Tisas is good but not heirloom stuff if that matters. Same as rock island.

Dozens of great options and seems to be a new one coming out every time you turn around. If you don’t need an exact 1911, but 1/2 1911, other half CZ shadow 2, you might really like the full size DWX. It’s my favorite.

Yet another option for consideration. (if not mentioned already)
These guys copied and grew from guys shooting CZ’s in competition from what I’m told. I haven’t shot it yet but locks up nice. Da trigger could be a touch better but im biased to a Wilson combat. I read good things about them. I wanted the cz orange but they don’t make it in .45. I only care to load for 45. A friend turned me onto this new Tangfolio stock II

Got/have several different ones.

My two favorites though are my Nighthawk Customs. Just got a Thunder Ranch in December.

Also have a Commander length model by Nighthawk as well.

There’s nothing like the fit and feel of a 1911. Absolutely no comparison to a striker fire pistol. I have a mid 90’s Kimber in .45ACP that shoots like a laser. My son had a Springfield that also shot well. IMHO you can’t go wrong with either one. Dan Wesson would be another good choice.
