Talk to me about 1911s - which brand/model?

1911s can be about a deep a rabbit hole as there is. Nat Match, GCs and bomar sights,,,, vs carry ones. I would not want to carry a Nat Match, that thing has about 50 sharp edges to hang up on your shirt, holster or coat. three of my nicer ones are a colt commercial, MINT condition, with 60 YO bomar sights. a super clean 1911 commercial w the faintest takedown scratch imaginable, and a newly acquired NM from the late 50s that is about a 9.8/10. I screwed up a fantastic shooter GC series 80. I had a guy put on a beavertail grip safety. It looked like i did the work in my garage. Made me sick.

My recommendation is if you find a 1911 you like and if it shoots well, leave the damn thing alone. And what ever guide rod is on your FA, I would leave that thing alone too.

Yes... if its a USGI original... LEAVE IT ALONE!!! Or sell it to me to put with my original 1943 US Rifle M1.

But if its modern production, upgrades and user specific mods are 60% of the fun. Dumping MIM for milled parts, factory quality for competition quality, and tailoring the gun to user needs is not just permitted, its morally necessary.

I went down the 1911 rabbit hole several years ago and went but off the rip. Bought me a Wilson Combat EDC 9mm. Found out real quick the double stack grip was way too big for my hands. So I purchased basically the same gun a SFX 9. Solid frame. Grips are machined into the frame. Fit way better. I now own a plethora of Ed Brown’s. Both the Kobra Carry’s (45 ACP) and the KC9(9mm). These have rounded grips. When compared to each other, to me the Ed Brown’s win. I still look for more Ed Browns to add to the collection. I’m after the lower serial numbered ones of course. Stainless or blued. Doesn’t matter to me.
Funny story though. 2 of the most accurate 1911’s I’ve ever shot was a Para and a Llama. So you don’t have to spend big money if you don’t want to. The Sig Ultra’s are nice too. Should have never sold mine many years ago.

I had a Colt Series 70 that never did feed reliably. I just didn't get on with it. Probably sacrilege in this thread but I traded it in for a Glock 23C. This was back in the 90's and I got a lot of stick for my plastic gun, until it started winning. Not one feeding issue.
I bought a brand new series 70 Colt when I was in the service. Reliability was horrible, until I took the collet bushing out and threw it away. Replaced it with a NM bushing and it ran flawless.

I’ve owned a couple 80 series, and they worked just fine. Only negative I saw was that they can’t be milled for an optic, at least that was the case a couple years ago.

Be careful what you wish for. One will quickly multiply. I have 3 a Les Baer Comanche in 10mm, Alchemy Custom Weaponry commander in 9mm and an old custom Colt series 70 government in 45. I love them all. I carry the 9mm daily.

A 1911 is a perfect carry gun for me, living in NY state. I can’t legally carry any more than the single stack can hold.

I would also keep an eye on

Karl always has an assortment of nice used guns going through his inventory.

the only 1911 I have owned and still own is a SIG XO. Thousands of rounds through it and most all of them my handloads with 200gr SWC. Very few malfunctions . Most of them my fault for a weak grip or a reloading issue when experimenting with OAL or case mouth taper crimp. Very accurate also. But I wouldnt mind a Wilson or a Nitehawk.

As a die hard 1911 I have owned many over the years and keep some on hand for ‘all’ occasions, real or imaginary!

To stir the pot here a bit, remember .45 is the only caliber worthy enough for a proper 1911.

Here’s a nice 1911 I picked up recently and then when I went a bit crazy a couple Winters ago I went and built some Frankenstein stuff that fits like a 1911, has some improved Glock 21 features and shoots .45 acp, plus P and 45 Super without any issues.

The best 1911 I ever had was a Nighthawk. Best trigger, best fit and finish. I also had a nice Colt Special Combat a well made 1911 from the Colt custom shop. Two other great ones were a Ed Brown Custom and a Dan Wesson V Bob. Right now I have a Helton built custom full size (top one) and a Ed Brown commander in stainless. (bottom one)

Probably shouldn’t even post here since I’m really not a pistol shooter. For that matter I haven’t shot much of anything since moving here in ‘17. I had a Ruger P91 (.40S&W) and brass in the thousands. Didn’t like the double action trigger. Always wanted a 1911, not sure why since I don’t shoot pistol much. Maybe nostalgia. So I replaced the P91 with a RIA in .40. Since my eyes are messed up I went with laser grips. I was doing some work for a local indoor range and was able to get an RIA double stack in .45 in exchange for the labor. I put a laser/light combo on the pic rail on that one. It’s been at least a couple of years and they’re still not broken in.

STI..I know they are 2011 but so much nicer and offer much more than 1911.
sti made a lot of 1911s. i’ve had 2 and they were as nice or nicer than any standard production 1911. but you right. about the 2011s. they are a lot of fun to shoot. i still have a 5” sti guardian
