Tac over Varget

Looks like they can be used for similar applications, I see Tac is a little faster burning than Varget, but they both max out around the same velocities. I'm able to buy 1 pounders of Tac locally while Varget is unobtainium. I use one or the other in my 5.56mm or the 308 Winchester.

Thoughts?

I get excellent results with tac in my 223 with the 69gr smk. No reason to use up the precious varget! It is also a ball powder, and flows great in my progressive press ,when I need a bunch for a 3gun match

I can say in all my reloading experience I have never had a load with Varget that was superior to other powder choices. In fact, those applications in which I had used Varget I found IMR 4166 did as well or better.
Same here. I've never been on the varget train. It's a good powder but I've virtually always found something else to work better in my applications.

Tac works well in 308 and 223.I see Varget starting to show up in my area, but it's well over $50 a pound. One good thing about both cartridges is the fact that they work good with a lot of different powders.

I keep some Varget on hand to test because I’m not gonna rule it out, but usually something else shoots better. Same goes for Retumbo. I have never been able to get that powder to shoot better than any of my usual go-to powders. I won’t even waste my time and components testing Retumbo anymore.

I have had good luck with TAC in the past tho. Shot very good in a 20 TAC which I thought was pretty fitting for the names :)

In the Ramshot TAC burn rate area, IMR 4895 is one of the most accurate all-around powders I have ever used. Never failed to tune in with excellent accuracy in any cartridge I ever tested with it. Although it is sensitive to temperature changes as far as velocity is concerned, it holds the groups together quite well because it almost always delivers wide node windows. Haven’t been able to find it for quite a while now and down to only a couple lbs so hope it comes around again soon.

If you can find some IMR 4895 in your area, I’d pick that up over Varget or TAC for sure.

Have had similar luck with RL15 as well but Alliant powders are the hardest to come buy since all this bullcrap started. Luckily I still have about 8 lbs of RL15

RL-15 is my go to powder for dasher

Thanks. I will keep that in mind because I’m having a Dasher spun up right now that I’m going to drop into a Wheeler LRB stock. I’ve had really good luck with RL15 in everything else I’ve run with it.

In that burn rate area I have H4895, RL15, N140, Varget, BLC-2, and CFE 223 on hand for testing so something’s gotta give ;)

IMO RL 15 performs great in the Dasher but it’s filthy I preferred H4895 in mine and Varget in my 6brx
