Tac over Varget

I think of TAC as a spherical 4895 rather than as a direct proxy for Varget.
An earlier poster mentioned 2520, which is slower than TAC. I use 2520 out of choice, not necessity, in my F/TR .308W with 178 Hornadys. If you can find Belgian-made 2520, buy it. IMO, it's a tad better than the ST Marks version. I think all TAC comes from Belgium.
At the end of the day though, these days, we have to work with what we can buy.

You'd probably like Shooters World Match Rifle. Rumor is it comes from the plant that was making 2520.

Thanks. I will keep that in mind because I’m having a Dasher spun up right now that I’m going to drop into a Wheeler LRB stock. I’ve had really good luck with RL15 in everything else I’ve run with it.

In that burn rate area I have H4895, RL15, N140, Varget, BLC-2, and CFE 223 on hand for testing so something’s gotta give ;)
I load for two dashers and for both the powder order of what shoots best is as follows:
RL-15
N140
H4895
N150

I’ve wanted to try this for over 8 months and I can never find any in stock anywhere. Not in a rush to find a 4th or 5th alternative but it’s always nice to know that you could use something different if you had to.

I figure powder is like beer, my favorite is which ever brand is in the fridge is my favorite. Seriously though I have used TAC in several different cartridges, it always performs well

IMR 8208 XBR is another really good powder in the Ramshot TAC burn rate if you can find it
I always thought XBR was a faster, bench rest type powder like H322. I've been running TAC again for shooting the 85 gr Match burners for AR15. Feels dirty to load ball powder again. ;)

In the Ramshot TAC burn rate area, IMR 4895 is one of the most accurate all-around powders I have ever used. Never failed to tune in with excellent accuracy in any cartridge I ever tested with it. Although it is sensitive to temperature changes as far as velocity is concerned, it holds the groups together quite well because it almost always delivers wide node windows. Haven’t been able to find it for quite a while now and down to only a couple lbs so hope it comes around again soon.

If you can find some IMR 4895 in your area, I’d pick that up over Varget or TAC for sure.

Have had similar luck with RL15 as well but Alliant powders are the hardest to come buy since all this bullcrap started. Luckily I still have about 8 lbs of RL15
Powder valley has some in stock

Thanks for the heads up but I can wait until it comes around locally. I like to support a certain local business that’s seems to get hard to find things in all the time and it also saves me the hazmat and shipping fees
No problem. I understand that. Your welcome. Yes add in those fees- unless your making a big order, not worth it for me as either for 4-5 lb.

Match Rifle (Lovex D-073.6) is made by Explosia a.s. in the Czech Republic and was sold as Accurate Arms - 2520 in the US until around 2001/2 when Western Powders bought the former Accurate Arms Co. and changed suppliers. (Even further back, the first AAC-2520 was an Israeli manufactured surplus powder that reportedly gave great results with the 168gn SMK in 308/7.62 M1A/M14 match rifles.)

Western Powders' loads data gives identical component sets and loads, pressures and MVs for the current Accurate-2520 with that for Ramshot 'Wild Boar', a Europe-only grade. As the latter definitely comes from Eurenco's P.B. Clermont factory in Belgium, that suggested that 2520 was also made there, but other Forum members have assured me that recent tins have 'Made in the USA' on the label and the powder originates in St. Marks. (@Woofie hints at this dual-sourcing in a earlier post and recommends the Belgian version as performing better.) We get Ramshot grades including Wild Boar / possible Accurate-2520 in the UK direct from the Belgian factory and TAC is the best seller in the range by quite a margin, many purchasers being former H4895/VarGet users. As others say, they bracket VarGet in quickness, TAC a trifle 'faster' and Wild Boar / 2520 a bit 'slower'.

Interesting read. I've never tried Wild Boar. I'll have to try some of I happen to find it.
