Switch barrels on Rem 700?

If the recoil lug has been pinned to the action, you can change the barrel with a barrel vise and an action wrench. You will like it better if the barrel channel in the stock is enlarged so that the barrel can be removed and replaced without removing the scope or the stock. I mounted my barrel vise to a piece of 2" square tubing and put it in the receiver hitch on my truck. I have also found it best to wrap the barrel with thin cardboard or something where the vise contacts the barrel in order to keep from marring it. Gary

There is really nothing to it other than both, or all the barrels have been set up exactly the same way as far as measurements are concerned to fit the action perfectly...

Can a new barrel be ordered (when recoil lug pinned) when needed without sending in the action (to fit barrel), like with a Bat or other custom action ?
What dimensions would be required?

What size recoil lug (thickness) over the original size would be sufficient/best ?

Hi Dan, once the method of doing it is explained , no problems or uncertainty will exist.

I won't be doing the work myself, I just want to understand the process.

With all barrels & action/bolt & reamers in hand-
Action face/threads/abutments trued/molested.
Bolt lugs/face & nose trued/molested.

Breech/Dimensions annotated.
Barrel tenons threaded/counterbored.
Chambers cut/Bbls crowned.
Check headspace on all chamberings.

Spin on Bbl of choice!

If the 'smith/plumber looks at you w/ that dumb founded puppy dog look-seek a professional!

Pre-fit Bbls work w/a "NUT"

Short chambered Bbls- intended for pull thru reamers(M1Garand,M1A,M1Carbine etc)

Hello preacher. Can a new barrel be ordered (with recoil lug pinned) when needed or a different cartridge case (same caliber) without sending in the action (to fit barrel), like with a Bat or other custom action ?
I realize that all pertinent measurements would have to be available for the gunsmith to duplicate a second barrel.

If it can't be done like with a Bat action please explain why if you have the time.

Changeling, read Larry Racines article on switch barrel rigs very interesting specially the ease of it (no vise). He must have it down because he shoots BR with it and sounds like he does alright. It's worth a look might answer some of your questions.

My smith makes and keeps a drawing of each bbl he chambers. Makes it easy to use the same action for a new bbl. I have the bbl drop shipped to him, he refers to he dimensions for prior bbl in same action, calls me on the phone when it is ready, I take gun to him, he screws on new bbl, checks headspace, and I am usually good to go.

Switch barrels on a Rem 700 are no big deal. I spin them on and off my action all the time and I'm mechanically challenged. To try to address your other question, your trued action will be unique (unlike the customs that are virtually identical to one another). Maybe your original 'smith would keep the measurements and make you an additional barrel without the receiver, but I doubt any other 'smith would.
