Remington switch barrel

Have Remington 700 switch, swap) barrel rifles.

On mine, the recoil lug is welded to the action so it doesn't twist or move when barrels are removed. Others have pinned their recoil lugs.

Some of my Remington switch barrel rifles use conventional shoulder barrels. Others use Savage-type barrel nuts. Prefer the barrel nut approach.

Enjoy switch barrel rifles.

I know a savage is relatively easy to switch. What is involved in making a Rem. 700 a switch barrel? Thanks.
In addition to the above advice, the Remington switch-barrels I have seen required an action wrench and a barrel vise. In the case where a barrel nut is used, a barrel nut wrench would be needed and you can dispense with the barrel vise. You will also need GO and NO-GO gages for each barrel where the chamber is different.

I love having multiple barrels for my Savage. I have not seen the utility in converting a Remington to a switch-barrel. But, hey, this is America, and you have choices.

Good luck.

All of my 700's are set up as switch barrel rigs.
Some of them have the lugs pinned, some not.
The advantage to pinning is you don't need to take the action out of the stock when switching barrels to index the lug.

Or you can buy a pre-fit barrel from Pac-nor and a barrel nut from them like I just did for my Rem.700, it uses the same Savage wrench and if you plan on using the thick recoil lug be sure to tell them to give you a few extra turns of thread.

while on the subject of prefits, i ordered a barrel for a savage from Krieger. It is not going to be finished, just a blank. i was going to have the smith chamber it. If i get a reamer from Pacific, will Krieger ream that barrel for me and thread it to fit my savage. The wait for the barrel is 12- 14 weeks and my action is going to be ready to go before then, so i was trying to save some time. or should i wait and have the smith do the barrel at the same time he trues the action?

again, thanks.

I have two Remingtons that I cut a notch in the front face of the action to accept a Savage custom lug from Savage Shooters Supply. I also made a bushing to fit the Holland locating pin to make it fit the Savage notch.

I also have a Remington bolt that I modified to accept a Savage bolt head but that is another story.

while on the subject of savages, i have a savage with 308 boltface. It is going to Fred at sss when the barrel and reamer arrive for 6br. would it be a good idea to get a 223 bolt and have it timed and trued to this action at the same time so as to allow switching barrels to 223 or the such. where can i pick up a new 223 bolt? or should i go used?
thanks in advance.

As for making a 700 a switch barrel, I have modified a fair number, successfully) by making a bushing with a flange that traps the lug, and provides the shoulder for keen' snap fit barrel installation. Barrel shank is .880x24TPI. works great and requires very little little torque to work correctly.
