Swift question.

I have read a lot of posts about shooting the heavy bullets from the .22 calibers and was wondering why no one shoots a .220 swift with a fast twist. I realize that the speed is the swifts' main attribute but it seems you could push the 75's n such a lot harder with one.

I have a Pac-nor barrel in 220 Swift AI, 1/7 twist. I bought it
to try 75 gr Hornady A-max bullets. Groups are good so far, but I have not chronod it yet. Still working up loads, but it looks very promising.

Steve, I have thought about that. Could be that the bullets may come apart. Maybe somebody will chime in for us here. Bill

I think most people would prefer the more traditional high powered 22 cal target cases like the 22 dasher and 22BRX. They will do what a 220 swift does with less powder, smaller primer etc and should be better on barrels. The only other thing you could go to is a 22-243 AI to get the most behind the small bullets but barrel life would still be very short.

I mentioned trying a 220 Swift AI. I also have a 22-250 AI in a 1/7 twist, and a 22-243 AI in a 1/7 twist, all Pac-nor barrels in Savage PV actions. I am shooting all of them working up loads and looking for the best answer for 400-600 yard varmint work. I have a borescope and will be watching how they eat on the barrel, as well as how they fowl. I am shooting 75 gr Hornadays in all of them as well as trying some 52 gr Hornady V-max bullets. Nobody is coming apart yet. I have had trouble with the Winchester white box 45 gr bullets. In a 22-250 they almost all come apart in a fast twist. I'll let you know how all this works, but it will take me a while.

I currently shoot a 220 swift Sako factory rifle. I recently trued and floated and it shoot great. it shoots 1/4 inch groups at 100m. Shoot 55 gr hornady v-max.

Soz, shoot my bullets at 3680 f/ps and none have come apart. Use federel gold primers in norma cases and use Somchem S355 powder, 39gr. I believe the powder is similar to imr 3450?? Not sure!

The rimmed case on the swift is a lot of the reason they are not used much, tough to cycle in a bolt action repeater, no problem in a single shot like the #1 Ruger...... or a lever gun...
Most 75 Amax's need to be pushed over 4000 FPS before they will come unglued....

I have a .220 Wilson Arrow with a 27" 1x7.7 Krieger barrel on it. It seems to like 80 gr bullets right around 3,300 fps.
