Surplus ammo is junk! Here is proof

Machinist, Designer, and Shooter.
Made this video and thought you guys might get a laugh out of how bad Communist ammo can be. I was contemplating trying to fix it but I think now it would be a waist of time. Enjoy.

Feel free to critique me. I really don't mind.

Here is the second half.

a) when pulling bullets, first seat them deeper to break the seal...yes they are sealed.

b) why bother ?

c) you want accuracy try lapua cases, and good or better bullets.

D) buy a milsurplus rifle with a excellent bbl.

Why are you complaining about it - it does exactly what it supposed to do, and i does it very well. They are not match rifles...

Some time when you have a free day, go on the internet and read about the Russian Snipers at Stalingrad with their Mosin Nagants - they were death on wheels, and devastated the Germans with their better Mausers and better ammunition.

lol..another myth.....
russian milsurplus 7.62x54r will shoot much better than that in a decent bbl.

the rifles are really old, but were designed to keep shooting even with bore wear.
the very early rifles have very tall lands and will shoot well even after all these years.
the best in my opinion are the finns and the russian 43's that were basically new unfired in many cases. or like new if they were fired.

with a good bbl 3" with flyers is typical with milsurplus ammo and iron sights.
after that it is like any gun, better trigger, scope, bedding or laminated stock, there is russian match ammo.
then move on to hand loads and we are talking a whole new world.

i own over a dozen 91 based rifles from several countries..all are shooters and some are collectors on top of that.
anyone want to see what a stock bbl/reciever can do ??

mil ammo is made to body mass size targets.

You've created a good educational video that, IMO, is actually deeper than it appears on the surface.
You've demonstrated that mass produced military ammo is not intended to be routinely used for well aimed accurate shots. It's made to be used in great quantities on a battlefield where it is more often sprayed around the target area in massive amounts in the hope that it will connect with something that represents a threat. If a fire fight offers the opportunity to take a well aimed shot the ammo is capable of hitting a mass that measures roughly 24x16 inches; a fairly large target for a qualified rifleman by any standard.
If your bullet jackets are copper metal alloys, rather than pure copper, their galvanic corrosion potential in a steel case is considerable. Even pure copper jackets offer some threat of galvanic corrosion. Under those circumstances neck tension is constantly changing over time.

Very cool. I did not think of corrosion as a source of inconsistent neck tension.

For the rest of you. What I discovered won't keep me from buying surplus. I like collecting it and have over 12 veriaties ranging from Chinese to armor pearcing with tatanaium coars (which were super expensive by the way 3$ a bullet). Surplus also makes a great backup. I will probably bary some out back should the country ever go off the deep end.

And I am a very big mosin guy myself. Only have 8 so far but there seams to be no end to collecting and modifying them.

Its called surplus ammo for a reason, the new ammo coming in the front of the warehouse pushed the "OLD" ammo out the back door. Sometimes it is very good ammo and sometimes it goes "click".............................."bang"

If you want to further your education you should collect surplus rifles from countries that speak English and have manuals you can actually read. An Enfield rifle doesn't take the Incredible Hulk to move the safety and you can talk to real armourers who speak a form of the English language.

In a Enfield forum we lost a Enfield postal shoot to the Australians (Ozmanics) and the next day I post a photo showing how displeased I was at the outcome.

Notice: No koala bears were hurt or injured during the filming of this posting.

Wasn't there a video of a guy with a Mosin-Nagant and milsurp ammo shooting "minute of rock" at some real long range here recently?

Good dissertation on Eastern Bloc ammo. Can you do a comparison with U.S. or other country military ammo? That would be informative. I promise no condescending replies. ;) Hog

I would like to see that video.

Hog I don't curently have any American surplus. I plan to shoot this 188 stuf today and compare surplus with some yellow box match ammo that I have. Everyone is wondering how it's shoots so I guess I had better show them :)

"Surplus ammo is junk"

I agree.
However, if you find a a good one (i.e. your barrel likes it) it could give decent results.
Check this video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eO-G-JR_Nm8
Ammo brand is "HK", 168 gr hpbt, year made about a decade ago. 5 shots, 95 meters (100 yds +).
No any treatment with the ammo. We don't do reloading overhere in Indonesia, surplus ammo is what we can get!
They give 1 m.o.a accuracy or less (80%+ of the time) on at least 4 different rifles that I know.

Of course it's NOT benchrest accuracy, but it's good enough (or "great") for surplus ammo.
seb.

Very nice shooting. What cartridge? I understand how that is. In Australia they reload their serplus cause it's so hard to get anything.

This is on the box:
20 cartridges
7.62mmx51 ball/
.308win match 168grs
Lot HK - 2 - 95

seb.

Why do you buy a junk rifle that's between 70 and 125 YO and complain about ammo quality? This website is about quality equipment.

grim...
while there is some good mil surplus and some bad...the 188 has a good reputation in the mn world.
if you have the yellow box match it should shoot better....
but it is more about the
rifle
and the
shooter...

lots of people complain about the ammo and their rifle is the issue.

all this ammo is corrosive and a bunch of the bbls out there are sewer pipes....or have bad /dinged/rusted crowns.

It is what it is! I certainly hope you didn't shoot any of this crap in that beautiful rifle you had pictures of on this site. I in my youth was given a mauser 8mm and some ammo. I had no idea that there was such a thing as corrosive ammo and ruined the barrel. When I found out what I had done it was the first rifle I rebarreled my self. I gave it to the son of a guy I work with and he is learning to shoot it. I have a thing for surplus ammo and wont use it on anything ever again. But good luck, don't wreck a good gun on junk ammo when you know how to make your own.
