suppressors

I am thinking of getting a suppressor for varmint hunting. I live in pa. so with the proper paper work it is legal.
That being said what do i look for in one?
I would like it for 223 and 6mm.
Cost?
Quick connect or thread?
Any info would be helpfull or if you have one that you like or one to stay away from.

Thank you, Ollie

check out Sniper's Hide forum. They have a whole section dedicate to this. I just did my paperwork for mine. I went with an Omega 30 from SWR. I just built a 300/221 fireball that it will go on. Now I get to wait the 6 months till I get it.

Don't bother getting a supressor for a 22 centerfire by the time you load it down to any subsonic level it will not kill much. The only supressed rifle I would build is a 300 Whisper aka 300-221. Any centerfire rifle with full house loads will be so loud it will require hearing protection.

I'm using a SWR Omega on a 223 AI and 308.
It really takes the bark off the 223AI and the 308 is very quiet as well.
It is sharp and snappy due to the sonic crack but no big boom.
My brother heard me shooting from about 150 yards away yesterday and thought that a branch had fallen out of a tree in the hedgerow.
Where are you in PA?
How much are you looking to spend.
Generally speaking, price is generally pegged inversely with weight and effectiveness.

MLC,

I assume you were shooting full loads through your can? I plan on doing nothing but subsonic loads through mine. I have never had one before. Can I assume I could shoot subsonic loads, and people 100 yards away not know what's going on?

If this 300 turns out good, I may do a 338 on a 6br case. A 300 grain projectile moving at 1050 fps should have some serious knock down should I choose to hunt something with it.

Ollie,
You will never regret fitting a quality suppressor to your rifle for varminting! The only potential problem is when firing a large amount of shots mirage from your suppressor can cause some problems. I fixed this by using one of Tab's suppressor cover - problem sorted. I shoot a ASE CQB suppressor on my 6BR varminter - superbly quiet, you don't need hearing protection & you can easily have a conversation with your spotter at hand. All my varminting buddies shoot suppressed rifles - we have a far higher success rate (less game disturbed), we don't annoy the nearby landowners & did I mention it quite often improves accuracy. I have also noticed a trend that Berger VLD's seem to go to sleep far sooner when shooting with a suppressor.
In New Zealand it's almost rude not to use one ;D

Do you use full house loads or are they scaled back a bit?

Thank you all for the info. There seems to be quite a bit more to it than i thought.
The reason i would like to get one is that the farms the we hunt dont like the sound of the shots disturbing there animals.

A couple of my friends recently got their paper work approved and built their own suppressors. They found by going to the silencer talk forum they were able to find a wealth of information. As for non subsonic rounds the silencers they made make it to where you dont have to wear hearing protection when shooting them. It is pretty nice. It almost makes me want to go through the hassle of filling out the paper work. They are impressive.

Vixenfo,
No load reduction, just full house high velocity loads. My 24" 6BR is shooting a 95gr Berger VLD @ 2,780fps or 70gr TNT @ 3,300 fps. You still get the sonic crack but something that can be likend to shooting HV 22LR. Game will often stand there or often run towards you because they are unaware of the direction of the shooter. I'll never go back to shooting an unsuppressed rifle, the benefits greatly outweigh negatives (added weight & length).
