Suppressor

I am thinking of getting a suppressor for varmint hunting. I live in pa. so with the proper paper work it is legal.
That being said what do i look for in one?
I would like it for 223 and 6mm.
Cost?
Quick connect or thread?
Any info would be helpfull or if you have one that you like or one to stay away from.

Get a quick disconnect, and get the largest one you want to shoot. A 308 suppressor is very effective even on a 223. A machine can tell the difference, but your ears probably can't. It takes a LONG time to get the paper work done. You have to buy the suppressor, because the paper work is by serial number. So you can't apply for the paper work, get a license, then go shopping. A quick disconnect allows you to move it from gun to gun, the suppressor is licensed, not the gun it's attached to. Everything I've just told you is from research, I have yet to get mine, it takes money and TIME.

I have quite a few suppressors, so i know a bit about the process. the tax stamp is $200 that you pay to the BATFE, that is on top of the price of the suppressor.

for the 223 and 6mm, I would get one suppressor in .30 cal. I just got this one http://www.gem-tech.com/STORMFRONT.html for my 6.5x47. You will not be able to tell a difference in sound suppression between a 223 can and a .30 can on a 223. Some people claim you can, but if that's the case, it is a very very small difference. I cannot tell any difference.

I have a lot of different brands. AAC, gemtech, SWR, YHM, etc... All the big names make good products. But, for my recent purchase posted above was bought because it was Ti.

One thing about cans is that they can get pretty heavy hanging off the front of the gun, and you'll really appreciate the lighter weight. The Gemtech, sandstorm in .30 cal, is close to the perfect bolt gun can in my opinion. It weighs a 1/3rd of what steel cans weigh, but still does just fine in the suppression area.

also, the paperwork process is not really that bad. usually 60-90 days. it goes by fast.

second also. if you make a trust to file the form 4 in you don't have to get finger printed, or get the sheriff to sign off, or enclose passport photos. i did two with the sign off, and all the rest i've done with a trust. the trust is the only way to go.

Hi Ollie,
The paper work and license will cost you around 200.00, the can will be from 500.00 for steel and more for Ti.
You have to be finger printed and references will be checked.
In PA you can hunt varmints and big game with a can.

I agree with the Trust route for ownership. The first time through it is a bit confusing but thereafter the process is pretty easy. I got a call today that my tax stamp was in on a .22 silencer I bought Jan 20, so it took just over 3 months.

The person selling the silencer to you should be able to help guide you through the process, look for a class III dealer you feel comfortable with. Some charge for helping with paperwork, some do it no charge when you are buying from them.

I use one of these on a .270 hunting rifle. Certainly doesn't cost $15-1800 here in the UK including tax, but sounds as though you have extra taxes to pay there in the US. http://www.qsmsilencers.com/index.html

I got an SWR Omega 30 and it ran about $800 (plus taxes). Find which one you like (try going to snipers hide as they have a complete forum dedicated to supressor's) and then searching for a seller in your area. I will also agree with the trust route insted of the individual route. Much easier.

I've gone the private owner route twice and will do the next one with a trust. Only mistake I made so far was with the 2nd one, for the .223; the advice you are getting above to get a quick disconnect type in .308 (the quick disconnect fitting is also your adapter for different thread diameters and pitches for calibers large enough to require a thread bigger diameter than 1/2-28; 2 or 3 quick disconnect adapters will cover it all) is excellent. Because I didn't think to do that, that can is limited to .223s instead of being able to use it on 6mm, 7mm and .308 rifles, too.

Don't know about the background check for trusts, but as this is written I'm waiting for the 3rd can to be approved, and it looks like it will go over 6 months before it's done. The first one (pre-Obama) took less than 90 days, including the local Sheriff's part. The 2nd (early post-Obama) took around 90 days. The third one is at 22 weeks and counting since they cashed my $200 check, and that seems about normal at this time. According to statements made to my local Class II/III dealer in a recent (2 weeks ago) BATFE briefing, Form 4 applications numbered about 400,000 last year, while this year they are double that, but not much in the way of additional examiners, so big backlog, so 6 months is not unusual.

5/12 Update: Dealer called today and I picked it up this afternoon, so the clock stopped at 22 weeks to the day for the processing and approval of the Form 4.
