Suppressor for Hunting & Target Practice

If you are going to use a suppressor on your rifle, I would suggest that you treat your rifle as a complete unit - pick your suppressor and start your load development with it.
Remember to take it off at the end of the day after every time you use it, even if you didn't shoot it in a hunting situation - don't store it with the suppressor fitted.

What is the consequence? Not questioning your knowledge, just trying to understand the reason.

I have 2 cans- started with 22 and moved up to a Gemtech 30 cal.
Many of the other 30 caliber guns and all of the sub 30 cal. that are threaded share the Gemtech
I would probably recommend going 338 just because you can always shoot smaller through the 338-

Will also asiduously avoid the "make your own" question in that I lack the tooling and experience to manufacture my own
and I am fortunate enough to say that at this stage of my life the cost is not a material factor.
You will have a 9 to 12 month wait on the paperwork so this season is a non starter.
You will have a shift of impact and I make notations on shift in my hunting guns
My accuracy improved-reduction of recoil? less muzzle blast nose? inherent smoothing of the blast front exiting the muzzle?
No idea but it is there.

Seeing as how my hearing is already shot (pun intended) the can makes my life easier in the field and I have slowed the degradation of my hearing with the use of the suppressors.

I will leave the question of using a trust or not to others-when I die I don't think I will be concerned about the dispersement of the cans to others-neither of my children shoot and grandkids probably won't either.

Get one and enjoy the relative quiet

silencers are illegal to own in wisconsin but flash suppressors can be used for hunting these are two totally different items suppressor yes silencer illegal

TB Ultra 9 and do not look back. I have a lot of silencers and that is my favorite, use all the way from 556 to 300wm. My TB ultra 9 takes no adjustment to rifle on or off and that to me is critical, weight makes a difference also. There are a lot of companys making good sound products now compared to several yrs ago.

Of the ones I have, I really like the Allen Engineering for SPR. The best part is the mounting system. Close second is the legacy Surefire FA762SS. I've used this guy on 300WM, 30-06, 308 bolt gun, M1A, and ARs. It served me well over the years.

I have the Sig SRD762 Ti and I shoot 6.5CM , 308, 300 BLK, , totally impressed at the db reduction. You're still going to need hearing protection shooting supers , but even if you send a shot down out in an open area without h/p it's not bad. If you shoot from under a canopy structure, it's still loud. I also handload subs and that's an AWESOME experience, especially thumping steel at 200 yds. The interesting trajectory aspects of a subsonic fired shot is a very unique experience. No need for hearing protection shooting suppressed subs.

The day has come. I'm considering purchasing a suppressor. My ears ring after shooting even with plugs and muffs. It's probably more from the other 6 people at the range ripping off shots than my own gun though. I think I need to reevaluate my shooting location. I know a very small amount of info about suppressors. I have two guns which I would like to put it on:

Cooper Model 92
300 win
9/16x24 thread
currently has factory seamless brake
24" barrel

Ruger Precision
6.5 CM
5/8x24 thread
currently has factory self timing brake
26" barrel

Questions:
  • What suppressor is best for precision accuracy?
    • I've heard good things about Thunderbeast and Silencer Co
  • What suppressor is best for hunting?
    • I probably don't want the length over 5". I figure the muzzle brake adds 2" to my gun. If I add another 3" onto that for a 5" can, maneuverability shouldn't be terrible.
    • Lightweight options out there? The can will get to see a lot of country.
  • Would you get a muzzle brake adapter for each gun, or have the can direct thread and put an adapter on one of the guns?
  • Would you get a .300 caliber or .338 caliber?
    • I don't have any current aspirations for a .338, but who knows what the future holds.
    • How much does being over sized affect the noise reduction?
  • I'm also wondering if I should even bother putting it on my hunting rifle. The braked 300 barks pretty loud, but once I get it tuned up, I don't really need to shoot it more than a few shots a year.
    • Hearing protection while hunting isn't always convenient or achievable though
  • Do you see much of a point of impact or accuracy difference when removing the can?
    • It might be nice to use the can for practice and remove it for lugging around the mountain.
I appreciate you taking the time to answer any of my many questions! Thanks!
The only thing that I can tell you that will actually be relevant is I only have one regret using a can on a hunting rifle. that I didn't buy one 30 years ago. Buy a 30 cal and use it on everything.

The gases from the suppressor will cause corrosion in the barrel and on the threads of the muzzle.
If you leave the suppressor on for any length of time (say months), and is used regularly, in some cases you will struggle to get the suppressor off.
In some cases, we have found a barrel with severe corrosion and pitting half way down the barrel for approximately 8", leading to the muzzle needing chopped fresh 2" back, and recrowned.

I buy my TBAC from Tar Heel State Firearms. Scott will have what you want in stock most of the time. He is a good source of info and most info is from experience.

Not a big deal to me if you have ever shot with one it does suppress the sound but by no means silence the sound, It does take a lot of paper work to get one though.

This isn’t true. Suppressors are perfectly legal to use in wi, including hunting. Just got the call that my stamp for the 338 ultra is in! Almost exactly a year since the check was cashed

I run a TBAC 30p-1 and a ultra 7 suppressor, both are super units, both titainium (only way to go) and the fact I live 5 miles from the shop and a local business. I have not had to change my loading data for them, I did have to change the zeros on all my rigs which does happen no matter what brand. Ive had a 1" to 2.5" difference with them off checking the differences at the range. I never go out shooting without one on my rig. My varmint barrels have the least amount of POI change and my pencil barrels the most. Once you have one you will wonder why you ever shot without one.

I have over 5k through my 30p1, 30ps and 6.5 ultra 7. They have gain virtually not weights and k don’t clean them at all

Any real world experience with the Silencerco Harverster 300 &/or the Gemtech Tracker? I'm pretty sure my wife wants me to get another can for hunting. If all goes well, this one wouldn't ever see more than 1 - 2 shots per day. I want light weight & inexpensive above all else - assuming it's not an accuracy detriment. This is so I can hunt without ear pro and not disturb the neighbors/ other hunters as much. These two seem to fit the bill. I have titanium/ stainless ones already for volume shooting, so that's not a priority.
