Suppressor for 20 cal

Hello all, I have a few suppressor questions. I was wondering what the best suppressor is I can buy for my 20 cal prairie dog benchrest rifle? I am also wondering how many rounds they are good for before needing maintenance? And lastly, are they quiet enough to where I don't have to wear earplugs? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks fellas. Jon aka dogreaper65.

Buy any good .22 cal RIFLE suppressor, not the ones for rim fire. They will noticeably quiet the report or the rifle, but you will still have the sonic crack from the bullet to deal with. Neighbors will still hey the shot but it will be diffused to the extent they won't know where the noise came from.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

To add to 1shot. I am fond of thunderbeast suppressors. That crack he mentioned is quite loud. So hearing protection is still needed. As to maintainance all I ever do is shake them out. Not that much comes out.

There are many companies that make very good cans and I have used a few but I am fond of thunderbeast.

I run a 30 cal thunder beast can on my 20 Practical cal since I use the can on all my rigs, 20-7mm.
Yes no earplugs are needed, BUT I still use them at the range.
I have over 6k rounds in the can, they don't need "service" as in taking apart...unless you are doing something wrong.

*** I went with the titanium can ( lighter) & the fact TBAC is right here in Cheyenne.***

I have a few extra TBAC cans in right now I am selling for a heck of a deal. I have two brand new TBAC 223-P2 I would sell for 700 bucks a piece. Retail is 925. I also have a TBAC 30CB-9 I would sell for 900, retail 1025. I have a brand new TBAC 338BA I would sell for 1500, retail is 1795. I would just do a form 3 to your local guy and you would do the paperwork from there. The last form 3 I did only took 15 days from when I mailed it to when it was approved. Usually its in the 5 week range though. PM if interested

Ive never tried the YHM's. I got my new TBAC ultra 9 in and did a round robin with it and my old 30P1 at 100 yds. Group was .3 inches off a bipod and switching suppressors between each shot. The ultra was definitely lighter. Noise wise I couldn't really tell much of a difference due to my hearing not being the greatest from being on the lathe all day everyday, lol. I should be getting my big order of Ultra 9's in about 6 weeks.

For sure get a .30 cal can. (.223 can a waste of tax stamp) No direct thread, look for one that has quick change muzzle devices, so that you will be able to go back and forth from multiple rifles with ease. Get one that is rated for full auto fire, capable of glowing red hot without failing. It will blow your mind how hot they become P-Dog shooting, if you are on a good town. JT

I understand the reasoning for Jtate wanting a QD mount. I'm shooting a Gemtech Sandstorm in 30 cal. direct thread and swap it back and forth between a SBR Rem. 700 in 308 and my 300 BLKout. Direct thread on connect has been proven to be more accurate and repeatable. If Jtate isn't having that issue, good for him as he is in the minority. In regards to loud, I agree 5speed that at a range where you can't control what everyone else is shooting, ear plugs are a hearing saver. Once you loose it, it doesn't come back. Along those lines I had a guy on my porch measuring my roof to put a new roof on. I had done some weapons repair for him in the past, so he ask me if I had any new toys. Instantly this gave me an idea. I pulled out my BLKout with the Sandstorm. There was a mud puddle about 300yds. out, so I ask him to stand at the middle dormer about about 20 ft to my left and I told him to watch the puddle, but describe what he hears. I backed up in the bedroom about 15' away and fired a round. I was amazed at how quiet it was in the house with no ear protection. When the guy came back to me window he looked like he just saw a space ship. He said he heard no shot, but rather a pfstttt sound like an air hose uncoupling, then a pop sound as the noise reverberated of my barn 90 deg. to the right of the firing position. He said that he could even hear the bullet hit the mud hole better than the shot. I could never be happier with my Sandstorm.
BTW, before you ask, these were NOT sub-sonic loads but 125 Sierra flat base PSP. Chronograph at 2,300+-

You can build your own for a little over $200 plus $200 for the tax stamp. Just set up a trust and file a Form 1 on-line with the ATF. But you need patience - the wait time is currently 98 days.
I have a 10" titanium tube that weighs 26 ounces. It contains 19 freeze plugs formed into cones for the baffles. No "special" tools needed.
My brother-in-law just shot my 6XC with the can on it and he said it was quieter than his 22 rim fire.

Wow! Thanks for the feedback guys. Truely valuable info, definitely pointed me in the right direction I would have never thought using a .30 cal can but that sounds like the best way to go..this is going to be a definite game changer in pdog country. I'm for sure going with the quick mount design as I would like to be able to interchange between a couple different rifles. Thanks again y'all, this is by far THE best website/forum for real shooters..no B.S. I can always count on it for first hand experienced info. Much appreciated. Dogreaper65

I'll give you my .02 for high volume shooting like your wanting to do I would definately go for a full auto rated can. When I know I'm going to be shooting a lot and might get too close to temp limit of my titanium cans I'll grab my stainless YHM phantom. I Appreciate the reduced weight and minimized poi shift of the Tbac cans I own but they are not always the right tool for the job. I've had the yhm can glowing in the past and it has never missed a beat. On my heavy barrel guns the poi shift is small and repeatable, even with the qd mount. I've found over the years that suppressors are a lot like guns, sure some of them can do a lot of things good but a specific one might be better suited for a job. The more the merrier :)

Simplified: A suppressor normally put a gunshot (ca 145dB) below the pain threshold (ca 135bB) but it can still be above the damage threshold (ca 85 to 115dB).
