Summer is here in Phoenix, need advice on mirage

Sounds like great fun, not! If I lived in Arizona I would figure out a way to shoot from my air conditioned car. Window down and take a shot, close window! I cannot imagine how you could really learn anything with the mirage being what it is at 110 degrees. I would be back at the range in October. Lol.

Born and raised in Southern Oregon, I never thought I'd ever live in Arizona. . . I do really miss the "green". So, I have a home off a golf course!

I find managing the heat is a lot easier than managing the cold. Before I decided to move to the Phoenix area, I ask a relative how they managed to adjust to the here in AZ having been a long ;time resident of Illinois. He said, he just treats the summer like winter. . . where you just don't go outside as much and easier to travel from one building to another. I thought I can deal with that. . . like not having to keep my car in a heated garage or chip the ice of the outside of it before being able to drive. When it's 110°F, I don't go out shooting in it, but the early mornings are cool enough to get some shooting in with no mirage (unless one is not under some shade). I find HOT HOT is easier to manage the COLD COLD! . . . especially at my advanced age.

Try it when it's 120*. Absolute convection oven!

I purchased this.

I had some clear plastic tubing a bit smaller than the 6.5 Creedmoor case. I resized the case, drilled out the primer pocket to 1/4" and forced it into the tube. I did this yesterday.

At the range I was able to test this setup. Worked famously.

Same here after seeing one of FC John’s videos some while ago showing him making a barrel cooler with a battery inflated for air mattresses and such. Just got a bit of clear hose from the local aquarium store to step it down from nozzle to the one that fit into the chamber. Between matches I can take off 15*-20* and if I had wanted to have one like the one with the spare battery pack, the local camping store had those that plugged into a cigarette lighter socket but I wanted one that was a bit more portable and I can charge it up from a USB socket in the truck if needed.
Cost from Amazon was about $25-30 and a few $ for the hose.
Get yourself some of those stick on temp indicators from McMaster-Carr and put one on your barrel an inch or so ahead of where it screws into the action to keep track of the temperature. Once things get beyond 130* or beyond I find that shots start to suffer…

I just shot a 600yd match in Alabama. There was terrible mirage on target but zero wind. The entire 10 ring looked a pot of boiling water. What to do ??
I turned down the power on my scope as much as possible and that let me see the edge of the 10 ring.
I made an elevation change and held at 6 o'clock.
I guess that worked OK as I shot a 598 39x.
