Suggestions for New Gun Vault?

I’d buy some good, lockable gun cases and some cable locks for the guns. Put some deadbolts on a closet door, somewhere “private” and call it square. A second safety layer would be to buy a small safe to put the bolts in.
Maybe check your insurance policy, too.;)

No need to get a heavy fireproof safe for a temporary residence. Go with a lockable gun cabinet. This one should do you will. Hide it in a secure location. Take the rest of your money and buy a new toy.

Funny! That's exactly the cabinet I was looking at yesterday, except the 22-gun cabinet. Although, who's kidding who? There's no way you could fit 22 guns in there. A couple sheets of plywood with some cheap pliable carpet and I could have a decent looking cabinet that holds the rifles, plus all the reloading stuff. If I was really clever, I would line the inside with Hardibacker for at least 30 seconds of fire protection. I have a lock on my filing cabinet, so I can secure the bolts in there.

Got it for $599 iirc payed $200 for delivery Costco safes are junk" I could get in with a small bar..
Every post above is wrong o_O

That's a great looking safe for $600. The door plate looks like it's close to 1/2" thick. I completely forgot that I have a friend who manages a locksmith store in Vancouver, and he used to collect guns. After I get my own place again, I'll have to see what he can order.

(Washougal WA is THE WORST for tweaker theft!)

Tweakers in Washougal, you say? I haven't lived in Vancouver for more than 15 years, but back then, the only thing notable about Washougal was the National Motorcross event. I think tweakers are everywhere now, including here. Pretty easy to identify. Grey skin with sunken-in eyes from all the weight loss, brown teeth, and an odor reminiscent of urine and paint thinner. You won't see them at work for at least two days after payday, and when they finally show up, they look like skeletons.

Both rifles came with cable locks, so that's an easy one. Renter's insurance is dirt cheap, so that's a no-brainer as well.

My thought is that the level of insurance for fire, theft or safe security should be related to your collection value. The gun insurance coverage offered by many/most homeowners polices is limited. If you want additional insurance to cover more guns, there are companies that specialize in gun policies only.

I'm resurrecting this thread because my plans have changed. Since I'm staying in my house instead of moving in with my sister, it will no longer be a temporary situation. Unfortunately, there are new complications. I am trying to recruit two roommates, so I want something more secure than just a light-duty Stack-On cabinet.

What do you guys think about building one into a closet and then covering the door with a shelf/shoe-rack facade? Seems to me that it would not be too hard to construct one out of plate steel, angle iron, carriage bolts, and hidden deadbolt locks. Costs way less than a real safe, but achieves the same basic purpose. Someone could still break into it, but they would have to really want whatever is inside. Not worried about my roommates so much as whoever they invite over.
