Stupid behavior -- High Angle Firing Video

During the early 1980's my family and I lived in quarters on Mare Island Naval Shipyard.
My quarters were about 300 or 400 yard to side of the on base rifle range.
One morning when I started for work I noticed a .30 caliber bullet stuck in the roof of my old 1971 Ford van.
It was a FMJ and had penetrated to just before the bearing surface. The point was sticking through the roof.
I'm pretty sure it could have caused a fatal injury .

A few years (maybe as many as 10) ago a youngster was killed by a falling "celebratory" projectile in a Richmond VA suburb. If I recall correctly it struck him in the top of his head and I don't think the person responsible for the death was ever apprehended.
Shooter probably doesn’t even realize he killed somebody.

To play the devils advocate for a minute, not that I condone the activity by any means but we don't know whats at the end of the trajectory curve. I live in a remote area and could do what they did with no worries of injuring anything but trees.

or hikers, hunters, bird watchers?

I am not condoning stupid behavior but here is an interesting story about this subject. During the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor Admiral Kimmel was struck in the chest by a 50 caliber bullet while he stood at his window watching the attack unfold. The bullet crashed through the window, struck him and fell to the floor at his feet. He said he wished it would have killed him or something to that effect. I always thought it was highly unlikely that it would not have caused any injury but I have read the story in a few books about the war.

As I initially said, I don't condone the activity, quite the opposite. I also said that I live in a remote area. My land and all the property around me is privately owned and all of us take a no tolerance approach to trespassers, so striking someone is next to impossible. Again, firing in the air is stupid, I just added another point of view.

There was such an incident in the Richmond Va area this New Years Eve where a bullet went through the roof, through the living room ceiling and embedded itself in a couch where the wife usually sits. Luckily, the couple had gone to bed.

Around five years ago I pulled into the parking lot of an office building I was doing maintenance at and as I walked to the back of the van I spotted what looked like a 9mm/115 gr. bullet laying there. It had minimal damage to it and may have been from a high angle shot. This building is in a part of town with a lot of lower income rentals nearby and higher crime rate. I took it to the front desk of the dental office I was there for and gave it to one of the ladies. She got a little bit of a worrisome look, but not too surprised considering the neighborhood.

I thought Mythbusters did a test years ago and proved “falling bullets” didn’t have enough velocity to be deadly. I don’t condone the behavior but facts are facts.
I’ll be backing off the internet . Too many false stories, sensationalism and yellow journalism. Maybe AI is involved? It’s getting on my nerves when people tell me cow farts are causing global warmiIng.
That show also ‘proved’ that hitting two hammers face to face was perfectly safe.
Years ago I dug a decent size of steel from just above a workers eye. Piece of steel matched that perfectly to the chip missing from the hammer.
They don’t put those warning labels on hammers and such because they have extra ink

Considering how it ended for him (1942) it probably would have quicker and less painful.
Years ago I was pounding the cross out of the driveline of a semi. Big hammer and a little frustrated. Last hit and got hit by a quarter inch piece of steel from the U joint. It was sharp and went an inch into my inner thigh. Another trip to the doctor.
