Strange Observation

At the range today...not shooting...working. Fellow shooting a new Glock in 9mm. Winchester marked box of 100 rounds. Said "Value Pack"on the side. FMJ. He came up to me with the barrel in his hand and asked if I had a tool to remove the cartridge which was stuck in the chamber. I looked at it. Primer was gone...just a black hole. Tapped the cartridge out without much effort and the bullet was still firmly in the case but there was a distinct ring at the case mouth. As if someone had done a 'super'taper crimp...but a very distinct ridge. Of the box of 100 he had fired about 75 and had these 'no fires' on three of them. Two he removed by himself. Asked if I could take them home to take a look which I did. I have not really seen much at all of factory ammo not firing due to the ammo itself over quite a few decades so it had my interest. I pulled the bullets and was really surprised by two things. First I suspected to find no powder.....not so..case had powder....the real surprise was lack of a flash hole. The primer would have ignited and then just destroyed itself with no where to go giving the 1st impression of a really HOT load blowing a primer. All 3 rounds....no flash hole, nor any sign of that had started to be punched thru and did not make it. Just a beautiful clean flat circle of brass as you looked in the case mouth.
Just wanted to pass it on.

I found a piece of new Remington brass for my 300wm that did not have a flash hole punched, found it when I ran it through the full length sizer. It is now a dummy round to set my seat depth. Never heard of loaded stuff not going bang, just goes to show ya can't rely on quality control 100%. Would be a good idea to let Winchester know about the issue.

i observed a simliar situation last year...a guy bought a brand new rem. 700 in 223 and some factory remington ammo...17 out of the box of 20 didnt fire...he had another box of winchester there and all of them fired...i never found out what he determined to be the problem..i just assumed it was bad factory ammo...

just another reasone to reload imo...if it doesnt go bang you can basically only blame ur self to an extent

This is all strange , I recently had a box of nosler E tip ammo that kept blowing the primers back into the bolt rail of a ar 10 and two cases stuck in the chamber. .??

Not surprised in the slightest to hear that. The words 'Value Pack' on ammo should always be viewed as a big red flag that actually means JUNK! You can be sure you'll get what you pay for.

A junk box of factory 300 win mag ammo, that was supposed to be premium ammo, is what made me turn to hand loading many years ago.

However, I will shoot good factory ammo in my handguns for plinking because its more convenient and saves me time. For good quality handgun ammunition at a more affordable price, I like to use HPR. But when I'm packing for protection, those rounds are fully inspected and hand loaded to ensure accuracy and reliability.

Thanks for that bit of wisdom and getting the dumbest thing I will read today out of the way before 8:00 am. It ranks up there with Rem guns from Walmart are cheaper because the steel is softer.
There's legal ramifications to these issues and this is a quality control problem that the company needs to hear about asap. Value packs I see around here are Win white box stuff and UMC yellow box that is the same as their 50 rd boxes.
Your post has no merit whatsoever.

Hey no problem. Always trying to help. Keep buying that cheap ammo. Just don't expect different results.

My point was you can only get value packs in the cheap ammo. You get what you pay for. Better to not buy cheap junk in the first place and avoid all this mess. A little complaint isn't gonna turn it into hand loaded match ammo. It will still be junk.

A gunsmith I used years ago showed me pictures of two 44 Magnums with blown apart cylinders from cheap Mag Tech factory ammo. They got a little more than they bargained for. One was a Dan Wesson, the other a S&W 629. Those fellas thought they'd save a few bucks and buy the cheap stuff. I'm sure they got their guns replaced and maybe some other incentives. But they'd have probably been better off buying decent ammo and not even having to deal with that headache.
