Straight .284 reamer

Getting ready to embark on my first build. I want a reamer like PT&G's .284 Winchester Match (6.5mm x .284 Norma / Lapua Brass Necked to 7mm). Do I have to buy a single use cutting tool or are there reamers in shops that are available for rent/borrow?

We have a brand new unused 6.5/284 Win match grade, no turn neck reamer will sell you cheap. Keep in mind that the Win is different from the Norma / Lapua.

Got no use for rented reamers, either. You just don't know what you're getting when you rent a tool that you probably can't gauge 'till after you use it and discover the chamber isn't the chamber that you wanted. Norma makes real good .284 brass that you don't have to neck up.

Borrowing reamers is right up there with borrowing underwear.
I suggest that you do your home work. The .284 Win has more screwed up chambers due folks try to make the necks to tight and the throats to short.

A freebore of minimum .235" and a minimum neck of .317" (for lapua brass) and .319" (for 284 Norma Brass) are what I would recommend.

Depending on if your building a short or long action 284 win will ultimately determine final freebore. You really won't need more than .090 in the SA but will want a minimum of .220 in LA. Just depends on your needs or wants in the gun.

I'll go the other direction on this. Freebore depends on the bullet you intend to use and the intended use. Single fed with 180+ grain bullets is best served with freebore a in the 220+ range.

I do consider posting a query on this knowledgeable forum "homework". Thanks for the responses. This will be a long action. I have Lapua 6.5-284 brass and 180 Bergers. I am not averse to neck turning if measurable accuracy improvements result. My smith says he will buy the reamer for his shop as long as it's a relatively standard "match" .284 chambering.

I will also agree that the bullet is as important as the action length if your willing to feed single rather than from a magazine(internal or external). I use an external DBM and it's a short action so in my case, being a short action, I do not need alot of freebore due to my oal max at 2.950. I think I'll have .090 with my setup once complete.
