Stoney Point Tool--New Tricks for Old Dog

I've been using the Stoney Point OAL gauge and comparators for years, both with the straight version and the "L"-shaped bent unit that works for semi-autos like the Garand.

I was reading the gear review on this site, and was amazed to see how, with an extra comparator, you can use this to sort bullets by bearing surface length:

My first reaction was "now why didn't I think of that?" Anyway, it's a nice review with some other tips, such as using a dowel to poke out stuck bullets) that you won't find in the instructions.

LD--glad you like the setup ;) several months ago, someone on br central mentioned that it might work. Since im cheap, and didnt want to spend $385 for shehanes tool, i had to try it.

works great!! quite an eye opener.

now i just need to get some 6mm inserts and start sorting bullets for my BR :D

make sure you have a repeatable caliper ;)

Quite possibly this idea is simply an extension/variation of the method I employ to sort 22LR ammo by rim thickness using the Stoney Point AOL bit of kit. Such appeared as an article on www.sportingrifles.com some 2 years ago! You can still find it there under "22LR Accuracy".

I too felt the need to apologize to Bill at Bald Eagle for not spending $100 on his rim reader guage! Neither though did I get even a "thank you" from Stoney Point!

Happy sorting!
