Stock opinion for Short range for score benchrest.

I promise this is my last question on this subject. Im going to be ordering a stock this week and debating the Kelbly KLP, Klub or TMBR or a McMillan EDGE. Leaning towards the TMBR.

What do you think? This will be a for score 30BR .

Thanks

TrxR;
To me, that is not a simple question. What sort of front rest are you using? Joystick? Knob Twister? For score I prefer a stock with some drop in the butt stock. This makes it easier to navigate the target, in my style of shooting.

First just make sure it conforms to the rules
Are you shooting IBS score?

some of the tmbr I have seen look to be a fairly straight butt stock

Local clubs, basically anything goes as long as its no wider than 3" , cant use 1 piece rest or mechanical rear rest or muzle breaks.

All of the stocks you mentioned are great choices for the short range score game. All are legal in IBS as well...something to keep in mind in the event of a change of heart and/or resale value.

I think the KLP is a pretty slick design being a "low rider" with no pistol grip that lends itself well to the free recoil style of shooting. I also like and prefer the taller 3/4" sides on the forend. In my experience, the taller forend sides in a stock of that design aids in tracking, resisting torque roll and allows for maximum contact and guidance with the front bag ears. Use it if ya got it!

I have experience with the McMillan Edge too, no complaints there, it's a great stock.

I have no time behind the wheel of a TMBR or Klub, but those that I know that have One speak highly of them.

What ever your choice is, be certain to advise the manufacturer that you would like your build to be 13.5# max to future proof your rifle. The last thing you want to do is tie your shoe laces together and permanently limit your options.

Pull the trigger and don't look back! Just my .02.

Weigh your hardware "all up"...barreled action, trigger, trigger guard, screws if it's not a glue in, rings, bases, scope minus any lens covers and turret caps, mirage shield and accompanying velcro. Then work the numbers toward a 13.5# total.

I know, you stated that you will be shooting local club shoots where the rules are sparse, but who knows what the future holds? At very least, set yourself up with a rifle that makes weight in common classes, even though right now, you don't see that happening. At worst, you'll be able to say and know you can be competitive with what's out there instead of having a hybrid One of a kind oddball. You'll be light years ahead of the game...what ever game you choose.

I dont have any action bolts or pillars here yet, i don't have the trigger im going to use yet either (jewel) but do have a 40x trigger here that should be close. so ill weigh that all up.

Since you are building a Heavy Varmint Rifle, your stock options are wide open.

I had a TM years ago, way before Kelbly bought the pattern. I found it to be not very stiff.

I like stocks that are close to a Robertson, which was patterned off of the SG&Y of the mid 2000’s, which was patterned after the original Borden Anamovich(sp).

Of the ones you listed, the Kelbly Klub is closest to that.

By the way. See if they will put some extra material in the stock. You don’t want a 26 ounce stock on a HV. An extra 10 ounces in the stock in the right area will stiffen it quite a bit.

Also for a HV, Shehane makes some great stocks that are legal and look great.

Tom told me the Kelblys version of his TMBR is stiffer than the McMillan version.

I will ask about adding material , im betting thats probably an option they have.

My option for stocks is less than i would like because it needs to be someone that has an export permit to ship to Canada.

As Jackie mentioned the Kelbly Klub is a copy of the Speedy / Borden/ Robertson unfortunately these are no longer made so the closest you will get to one is The Kelbly Klub.
I currently have 2 of them and they seem to be a good product. With that being said I also have 3 Robertsons and if still available would be my first choice by far.

I would go Robertsons as well if it was available , especially since he was Canadian with me being in Canada.

Shooting for a 24" barrel length, heavy optics (NightForce, etc.), and contemporary stocks, per Jackies comment, you'll have a tough time exceeding the NBRSA/IBS 13.5# weight limit. Don't sacrifice balance for barrel length: with a 30BR capacity, each inch of BBL is worth only 7-8fps. None of my [so called] HV rigs weigh within 1/4# of the 13.5# [NBRSA/IBS] weight limit . . . and that, includes deliberately using steel picatinny bases and steel rings, with NF and Valdada optics. Of course, there's always the adjustable [butt-stock] weigh system . . .
Make a plan, and as, anschutzer2013 stated, & "pull the trigger" . . . I'll add, with confidence!;)RG

Robertson stocks are being made in Canada under Felso composites . But I don't think they are making the one that was a copy of the Adomovich stock . Check out there web sight

Ive seen them but thought their prices were a bit high for my taste at 700us for a flat top. When you can get a Kelbly for less with basic inletting formed in.

Well i weighed what i have here which is the barreled action (Borden BRM with a one peice scope rail currently attached ) a Sightron 10-50 with burris singnature rings and a remington 40x trigger i had laying around and it weighed in at 11.034lbs on the dot. I dont know what the pillars and action screws will weigh or the bedding weight.

So what i have here and add the weight of a TMBR or KLUB stock i should be at 12.534 lbs before pillars and bedding. i could shed a little bit of weight by going to mounts instead of the 1 piece rail.

That's how it's done. Do the homework and get it right the first time. Nice work!

Thanks im still kind of torn between the TMBR and KLUB. I might just ask their opinion when i go to order. Im kind of leaning towards the KLUB.

Here is the bag setup im currently using. The rest is a Cowan. I will update bags down the road if needed.
