Stock finishing questions

Phil

Gold $$ Contributor
I have a wood stock that i bought used.

It is finished and looks good, the issue is that it had a comb modification done after it was finished.

The finish on the comb is less than desirable, thus i want to refinish the stock.

I was told , by the original owner, that it was a oil finish.....true oil or tongue oil, i can`t remember.

I like the color of the stock as is but want a tough finish like an auto clear.

Can i sand , scuff the finish smooth on this stock then spray a good clear over it???

If so, what do the experts recommend???

Thanks,

Phil.

Wipe it down with a good thinner after you have it sanded down, and get to clear coating !!!!!!

Block sand, don't break the sharp edges, wipe it down. 3 coats of PPG ceramic clear coat, lightly sanded between each coat. Top it off with KLASSE finishing glaze & sealer ;) I will be dropping off a rifle to my gunsmith today for re-barreling. I'll ask him to post a photo of the stock that I finished as stated above.

Phil--- Heres a few with that Eastwood European Clear, probably 8 coats. or more on them.....

Bruce,

Fourth picture down, who`s stock is that????

The manufacturer, that is....Not the individual owner.

Phil.

It belongs to P1Zombie killer, aka Wes, I made it for him a few years ago out of a panel of Royal Jacaranda laminate.... One of many of my AXE job's !!!!!!

Heres one that JRS did and asked me to post some pics since its at my shop for a re barrel..... You'd have to ask him what he put on it but its very nice.

Danke Keith 8)

3 coats of PPG Ceramic clear, applied with an IWATA Custom TH dual action airbrush. The airbrush gives me much better control with minimal overspray.
