Stock finish removal?

I want to refinish a 1969 ish Browning Safari rifle stock. It’s like a plastic finish, I want to oil finish it. Sand it? Chemicals?

And what to to about the checkering?

Oven cleaner. Spray , wait, wipe it off.

That stuff's hard to get off, I usually scrape it off, and then finish sand it, and recut the checkering..

In general, chemical strippers work. But not on 1 i worked on. Some kind of "epoxy"? Had to scrap it off with a piece of glass. Not fun.

I’ve used the backside of a hacksaw blade to scrape finish off, pull it like a draw knife.

I have cabinet scrapers. I'll go with scraping and sanding.

I used a 2" square piece of glass and scraped. Draw to you so it doesn't try to cut in.
