stock bedding

I have a 6.5X284 on a renington 700 trued action with a HS precision stock and brux barrel. I am getting about one flier in every 5 shot group. I have bedded this rifle to the stock with Brownells steel bed and relieved the front and bottom of the recoil lug. I am wondering if any of you think it is better to bed the stock down a small portion say around one inch onto the barrel or if it is better to keep the bedding behind the recoil lug?

I need to get rid of that flier that is turning a 4 shot group under .5 to a five shot group of 1.1"
BTW the flier is random and comes about anywhere in the group. It isn't the first or the last shot every time.

It could be something other than action bedding causing the fliers.

As far as bedding... some will say it's ok to to leave it in front of the lug about an inch under the barrel to help support the tube... others will tell you to float everything in front of the lug. In my experience, both setups work, but there are a lot more variables at play. I believe that you did the most important part with lug, and that's relieving the area underneath it!

I would question everything else before the bedding, like your rest setup. How hard are the bags on your front and rear rest? Are you shooting over wind flags? did you try another scope? Is your hold consistent? Have you tried different holds, including holding the fore end (even when shooting off the bench)?

chasing a single flier can be vicious circle... I'll even say that it sucks. I have that problem with one of my rifles, and still haven't figure it out :(

I have switched scopes.......both leupold. Tested on really calm days so wind would not be a variable. I am very capable with my rest set up to keep um all in .5" or better at 100yards. I have other rifles that shoot regularly in the .3-.4" at 100 I almost always get that dam flier with this new build.......not always but often enough so that i will not call that gun any thing but a 1.2moa rifle.

Usually 4 shots under .5 inches with one random shot in the group way out. This rifle will be used for hunting deer mostly...... not bench shooing but I would like to see nice consistant groups of say .6-.75 moa

I have tried jammed sierras140',bergers 130's. and 140gr Amax. All loads seem to give the dam flier that is way out of the group. I have tried H4831 powder and IMR 4350 all with CCI Br primers. Lapua cases, seat with redding BR die then check and reseat so that all measure the same jump or jam within .001. I have fired over 20-5 shot groups with various seating depths. I'm getting frustrated. This rifle acts like it would like to shoot.... but it isn't consistant.

Have you only shot loads with jammed bullets? In the barrels I have had so far, none of them favored jamming to jumping, even with VLD's.
