Stevens Model 200 rifle

Looked at one of these Sunday. It's in 7mm-08, and has a sand colored tupperware stock. MSRP is $329. but it's available for $289 + tax. I actually like the rifle. It is cheap looking, but solid. The store said that it is a Savage 110 without the Accutrigger or floorplate. The guy also said that the stock has pillars molded into it. That might just save a plastic stock. I'm thinking about getting it. Might be a good rifle for a new shooter or hunter in my family. Nobody wants to hunt with the rifles I have.

Any experience or advice?

Thanks, Tom

I have the 200 in 223 and it's a keeper. I believe the PO installed a Timney or Rifle basix, not sure. It shoots MOA and better with my loads with a sporter barrel. You can't beat them for out of the box accuracy for the price.

I'm still on the lookout for one in 308.

Hi, I have a Stevens 200 in 25-06 and it will shoot under .5 moa with hand loads. I did do some work on the trigger to smooth it out and reduced the pull to about 3 lbs.
Possibly the best $249.00 I spent recently on a rifle(bargain). I also converted another Stevens to 6mm br using a Shilen barrel and replaced the trigger and it is very accurate for under $700, just hard to beat that price/performance.

good rifles....i personaly did trigger work like the others have mentioned. beware of the stock like you mentioned...it is cheap plastic...keep your rifle rest towards the action as much as possible. i had a terrible time with my stock hitting the barrel when firing if i put the rest to far forward. that was causing some major flyers that took me a while to figure out why.

I'll see if I can find the $249 price and get one. The 7-08 is one of my pet calibers, so that restricts my options somewhat.

Thanks to all for the replies. Good info.

Couldn't get the $249 deal, but they threw in a base and 30mm rings, so I took it. Scoped it with a NC Star 3 x 12 x 50 scope that already I had. I've got about $360 total in the rig. Not too bad.

Gave it a good cleaning last night and borescoped the chamber and barrel. Not perfect, but better than I see in Remington and Winchester factory barrels. Except for the best custom barrels, the Hawkeye makes them all look bad.

I will load some 120gr Ballistic Tips for it and see how it shoots. It's really hot here, and I hate sweating on a gun, so it may be awhile before I get it to the range.

If I can remember, I'll post the results.

Thanks again, Tom

I bought one for $180 at Academy in late 2010. It proved to be a good base to build on (action sent to SSS for T&T, trigger, and recoil lug, and the parts needed to convert to the DBM, used old .260 Rem. barrel, whole thing pillar bedded into Manners MCS-T). Should have bought another.

Ditto on what nhm16 said. Helped Bro-in-law make decision on one in 2009 or 2010, can't remember. I should have bought 10 to put in the attic ::)

I picked up one last March for $187 at Academy as well. I think between myself, friends, relatives, etc. we must have a dozen of them... all purchased as donors. My buddy Mike has done the most with his. He's got a 260 already built with a heavy stainless barrel and a choate stock. The other is also going to be a 260 but he's waiting on the 'smith to ship out the barrel. He got in on a Shaw group buy on the Savage Shooters forum, but now apparently the 'smith can't get the barrels from E.R. Shaw. The biggest problem is the "centerfeed" design. There aren't a lot of stocks available for them. Mine is still sitting in the safe unfired a year and a half later. When it's all done, I'll probably snag a Choate stock as well. CDI Precision is making a DBM bottom metal setup for them and he'll inlet the Choate stock for it for a fee. Haven't decided wth to do with mine, but it'll probably end up being the basis for my 6.5/375 Ruger build. The 6XC build is the immediate priority though. Reamer should be here any day! WOOHOO!

Yeah, true. I had a B&C Duramax sitting around I was intending to use, but it was for "staggerfeed" long actions (where the mag box is attached to the action). People have made the Duramax work with these centerfeed long actions on savageshooters.com, but I used it as an opportunity to order another Manners, and it works great. I use the factory DBM on this gun.
