Stevens 44 barrel re-line....Like new bore now!

IT'S DONE!

Got the liner in, faced the muzzle, chambered, set the extractor.....Runs perfect! Ejects half way across the room! Just need to drill ant tap the barrel for scope blocks.
I cleaned up all the screws and fire blued them. Not sure what I'm going to do with the scratches on the side of the receiver...Comments??

Let me know what you think about the firing pin strikes. They seem "aggressive"? It goes "bang" but there are no sights currently so not sure about accuracy.

If it isn't a shooter, I found two more barrels in need of bores. One will be a 17HMR or a 17MkII. The other will be put into inventory for future use.

I used a round brass crown lap tool to flare the area around the chamber to fill in the void left by the original chamber. I then used a very small round Swiss file to set the ejector height. Once I had it close, I used the reamer with a tap wrench to clean it up and make it perfect with the chamber.

I counter sunk the muzzle to hide the line around the liner.

As you can see, it has some pretty good scratches in the receiver where someone did not know how these through bolts work. Not sure what can be done about this.

The wood is in great shape!

Now we just need to see how it shoots!

Really nice reclamation job. I've always been a sucker for the old falling block and rolling block single shots, so seeing one put back into what will probably turn out to be a pretty good shooter when you get sights on it is a real pleasure. Unfortunately, I have no economical suggestion to deal with the scratches.

Wish I had taken pictures when I received it. Could barely open the action. I had to put the whole action in the ultrasonic cleaner for near a half hour! All the screw heads were destroyed. I had to file and clean up the slots and then fire blue them. The extractor was buggered beyond repair. Thankfully Wisners carries parts for these old guns and they had re-manufactured extractors. The old bore was a sewer pipe. I test fired it at the range and couldn't hit a 2' x 3' target board at 25 yards!

There are more old guns I've brought back to life on my web site

Thanks!

Your 44 Stevens looks nice, congrats on your good work. Own a Stevens 44 too, that I bought off an internet auction a couple of years ago. When I got the rifle, began to clean it and check for problems. Had noticed british proof marks on the barrel and that puzzled me. When cleaning the muzzle, noticed some letters and took a magnifying glass to them. A.G. Parker was on it. What the heck? Its then that I took a hard look at chamber area and realized, hmmmmm, barrel has probably been relined by Parker in England, the man who'd came up with the idea of installing bore liners. The relined bore looks worn to me, but no pitting in it. Makes me wonder, how many rounds have been fired in the rifle since it was made.

When I was a youngster I refinished many old Stevens. I would draw file the actions to remove some of the dings and dangs and then stone to a nice smooth finish and re-blue. Today I don't know if they have collectors value so I would try to evaluate that aspect before doing anything. There are several video's around on how to draw file, not difficult to do.
