The Great Prairie Dog Steel Shoot

10 Steel Prairie Dog Targets ranging from 175-610 yards shot under time constraints.

Rimfire targets range from 50 yards to 175-ish yards.

$10 per rifle entry fee.

Third Saturday of every month, year round.

Each competitor will shoot all 10 targets in four separate strings requiring no more than 40 rounds.

One shot per target. No make up shots.

No penalties for misses. Only points earned for hits.

15 total seconds allowed per shot.

Targets hit within the first 10 seconds are worth 10 points. Hits between 10.01 seconds and 15.00 seconds are worth 5 points. If the competitor does not take a shot before 15.01 seconds or shoots after 15.01 seconds, it is a 10 point penalty, hit or miss.

Shooters start prone behind rifle with bolt handle up. Semi auto shooters start with safety on. Upon start signal shooter may load rifle and engage target.

4 divisions. Heavy rifle, 12+ pounds. Light rifle, under 12 pounds. Semi-Auto rifle. 22 Long Rifle.

Scopes, bi-pods, sandbags, rests, muzzle brakes, laser rangefinders allowed. SBR rifles allowed. Suppressors welcomed and strongly encouraged.

As of 2013 the caliber rules have changed. The max velocity for all bullet weights is 3,100 fps and no more than 30 caliber. Sorry, still no 338 Lapuas allowed. For the 22 division, only 22 Long Rifle is allowed. No 17s or 22 magnums.

Steel Core, Armor-Piercing and Tracer ammo *NOT* allowed. $100 fine per target that is damaged with above ammo. If you are shooting ammo that you did not load, check it with a magnet to make sure it isnt steel core. Steel core will destroy my targets and you wont be happy when **YOU** have to spend a grand or more replacing it all. In addition to getting 86'ed from the match/range.

Match re-entries are allowed.

The match starts at 9:00 and again at 12:00. The 9:00 match has 20 slots. Once those 20 slots are filled, everyone else will shoot the 12:00 match.

Sounds like fun. I would try it. But why not just post the yardages so you wouldn't have to worry with the laser. 10 seconds to crank on the elevation knob load a round and settle down and shoot would definitely favor the semi's.

Ahhh. I see I didnt make that clear. 15 seconds per shot...

Take your shot. Range the next target, make scope adjustment if needed, grab loaded round, signal to RO that you are ready and wait for the beep.

I dont want to see anyones barrels get smoking hot and I dont want it to turn into and IPSC match. Maybe let one guy shoot his 10 targets and let someone else get in there while he spots or something.

I dont want to post exact ranges because then it will make it the same match after match. This way I can move the targets around based on shooters and conditions. If the wind is howling I can pull them in, dead calm move more of them out.

One thing I have found with our IPSC Rifle matches is that the shooters get better. From a non-prone field position and low powered scope, most were complaining about hitting 10 inch steel targets at 400 yards. Now hardly anyone blinks.

That is a good Idea. At the club I go to we talked about doing what you said but with paper targets. What we were thinking about is having 5 targets at each bench out to 500 meters with the closer ones being someting like a crow and use bigger targets the farther out.We were going to randomly put the target out at differnt ranges for each bench and have the shooters use a laser rangefinder to find the right range.

The shooters would not know which bench they would have until the match would begin. We were going to have one class for all the guns.

maybe next year

good luck

Hoser, we shoot BR Varmint Silhouette at our range NE of Garden City, Ks. Biggest differences between your idea and what we're doing is that we're using the HP silhouette rails on our club's range, so the distances are always the same, and shooters are allowed to shoot off benches, prone from rests, or prone with bipod. We've got a pika, mouse) at 200M, a really small crow at 300M, a California ground squirrel, looks like a PD to me) at 385M, and a jackrabbit at 500M. We've limited max bullet weight to 115grs. to try to minimize target damage. Targets were cut from AR400 plate - 3/4" for the pika, and 1/2" for the rest.

All the targets are in an upright sitting position, which gives shooters a bit of latitude for elevation mistakes, but almost none for windage. The widest part of the 500M jackrabbit is a zone only a couple of inches tall that's just under 5" wide. We shoot north across a draw that runs west-to-east, with the 200M target rail just above the bottom of the draw. The terrain features always seem to give even a straight south wind some swirls & a vertical component; so far, no one has managed to clean all 40 targets.

Stuff like this has the potential to be a whole lot of fun to shoot, and fun to watch as well.

Should be a real hoot, and not too difficult to setup either. A good challenge of precision shooting skill too.

I like it! :thumb:

My goals for the match were..

1. Get Joe Blow the shooter out using the range and realizing that competitive shooting isnt bad.

2. Practice for hunting for myself.

3. Easy set-up and tear-down.

4. Easy to understand rules and scoring.

Could / would you send me the info on this,,, Maybe I could find someone in the Pueblo area to shoot with me ....
Thanks . Ray

Third Saturdays at the PWSA Range.

Starting around 12:00 or as soon as I get done shooting silhouette.

Exactly what info are you looking for?

For exact directions go to mapquest.com and look up 600 East Loma Rd, Pueblo Colorado, 81007.

The gate to the range is locked. The combo to the blue lock is 2506. Please lock it in series behind you.

If you dont see me set up on the 425 yard berm, look one berm to the west where the silhouette match is going on. I am the bald guy in a hawaiian shirt.

20 shooters and howling winds. Some tough shooting. The first hour there was 5-10 mph of wind. 4 hours later it was 20-25 steady and gusting up to 35 and fishtailing. A 6-284 shooting 87s didnt give a bit a wind and hammered them.

Everyone had fun.

Most common calibers were 223 and 308. Also seen was 20 Tactical, 22BR, 6XC, 6-284, 6.5-284 and 260.

The lack of dings/holes in the targets just reemphasizes the fact that if you cry once and buy good quality AR-500 steel, it wont get all chewed up and beat to hell.

Of the 10 shots I did get time to take, my miss on a 375 yard target was cause I gave it a touch of wind. I maybe held 1 inch off the plate.

I was amazed at the turnout and complete lack of sniveling about the target distances and wind.

It was great to meet you.

Hope to see you next month.

I showed up a little late, but enjoyed watching none the less. I will make sure I get there a little earlier next time.

Was the guy shooting the AI chassis shooting the 6-284?

There were some shots that I honestly couldn't tell were hits while the sighter was calling them as hits. The small calibers and the wind made it hard to hear them.

And did it really last 4 hours?
