I was looking to start competing in smallbore either NRA or CMP not sure who does it but I know one/both do. I was just wondering what would be a good starting point for equipment and any things I need to watch out for such as equipment weight or anything else. I was thinking about getting a 10/22 and putting volquartsen parts into it.

+1. Not only read and educate yourself in Smallbore Competition, but go attend some regional competitions BEFORE you start buying a rifle and related necessary equipment. Also, if you are serious in your efforts and wish to be competitive, be aware that a semi auto, regardless of the barrel maker, is going to have a real problem keeping up with the bolts guns also competing. That's another area to become knowledgeable about which is why you need to attend actual competitions to see what's on the line in not only rifles, but the equipment they use. I bought three different rifles before I found the one that made me competitive in local competitions. My grandsons are very much appreciative of my search to become competitive.

A 10/22 will work for Sporter class, after a lot of modifications, but if you want to shoot prone or three position you would be wasting your money. As others said, go to a few local matches and see what is on the line. If you are polite, must shooters will let you take a shot or ten. If you ask around someone might even make you a good deal on a used rifle; which will reduce the risk of getting in too deep before you are certain what you like.

That link should get you to the NRA Smallbore rule book. Don't know if you are aware or not, but I'm pretty sure you have to treat that 10/22 as a single shot. It might be difficult to load while in position. I understand you want to keep the cost down while exploring this venture, but you might be better off trying to find a good bolt action rifle to try first. At 50 feet most rifles will be be able to hold 10-ring accuracy on the NRA A-17 target. The USA 50 target is MUCH smaller and would be difficult for a cheaper bolt rifle rifle to hold 10-ring accuracy. Another thing to consider is your ammo. Most times, the more expensive match ammo will shoot better, but if you're not going to use match ammo, keep in mind that you can not use hollow point rounds. They must be solid. Have fun. It's a great sport to get into.

Mike, I live in northeastern Ohio. I was thinking sporter or prone. I don't think there are many matches for CMP sporter in this area though. Would a Savage Mk-I FVT be a gun worth starting with or would I be better off with a used Savage-Anschutz mark 10? Is the accutrigger alright? Thanks for all the info guys!
For prone, purchase a used anschutz with a 54 action, which one is not important , so long as it's in good shape with sights and a accessory rail. You should be able to pick up one for around $1k or so and will be able to get your money back out of it should you decide to upgrade. Other guns to consider are remington 37's, 40x, 541, and 513t. Winchester 52's b or higher or a 75 will work as well.
Next purchase some mid grade ammo and shoot a few matches, by then you will see other guns and may even have shot a few and can upgrade.

Might I suggest, if you want to try Savage, at least buy a Mark II in whatever model you prefer. An MKII model is much better and more accurate than a MKI. I started out with a pair of MKII models and ended up giving them to my grandsons after I upgraded to an Anschutz. And since you are talking Sporter, might I against suggest you look at an Anschutz 64 MPR (Multi-purpose Rifle) that has the rail on the underside of the forend of the stock. Now an Anschutz having the 54 action is superior to the 64 action. But the 64 action isn't as expensive up front and will outshoot many competitor models that you'll see on the line. Been there, done that.
