Starting out target shooting with an old 40XB

Purchased a 1988 single shot 40XB in 7mm Remington Magnum as a new project and to try target shooting. After doing some research and guidance from Boyd Allen, I have pillar/bedded the action, added a Jewell trigger, and mounted a Sightron SIII SS 10-50x60, Seekins high rings and a 20 MOA one-piece base. Refinished the stock while it was apart.

My first trips to the 200 yard range were a challenge, had a hard time just keeping groups under 4". After many rounds downrange, calls to Boyd and 5 different types of factory ammo, I am getting a handle on it now.

Learning how to use the scope adjustments properly, body position and setting the gun up on the bench has been a great learning experience. Two great surprises were how much variance in factory loads accuracy and when I installed the Jewell trigger.

Found some cheap ammo that shot well and some very expensive stuff that was all over the place. Federal Fusion 175 grain cheap stuff was what my gun likes.

The jewel trigger is very impressive as to the feel and break. Literally an OMG moment when I tried it the first time at 8oz.

Here is the gun and my 5 shot group from yesterday.

Now I need to either start loading some 7mm or go the 6BR/6PPC route and buy a barrel and bolt. I will take some time to make a choice and beat my shoulder up some more with my cheap ammo. :)

I'd say thats pretty good for just "starting out." And as you probably know, factory ammo isn't as good as hand loads. So if you decide to venture into that area as well, you may want to consider tuning your loads at 200 yds and that way your 100 target will look even better. But have fun and keep at it. Looks to me like your equipment is good and your teacher (Boyd Allen) knows a thing or two as well.
