starrett calipers quality

Very constructive post CROW ::) Right on topic regarding Starrett. You might consider moving your post to trailertrash.com

We use a lot of Starrett tools and all have been quality tools but the quality of their calipers has definitly went down. After having several Starrett calipers fail we started using Brown and Sharpe. They have been holding up much better. They are made in different locations also. The last one I got from Grainger was made by Tesa in Switzerland IIRC.

The thing that bothers me about American companies that move to China and other third word labor forces. Is this They built their Reputation for
quality with American labor, We aren't getting what we think we are paying for at times. and the price is just as high as if made by American labor.
The Price should reflect the Quality

Thank you Gerry for the recognizing exactly what I was getting at with this whole thread, plus wanting warn of this product. When I buy the cheap stuff I expect the cheap stuff, when I clear the cobwebs out of my wallet I expect the best.

Do you get on the internet and slam the maker of your Chev ord truck because it was expensive and they won't fix it after the warranty ran out? Do you know a lot of the parts on your American made vehicles came from China?
One example- I've installed 4 power window assemblies on a Chrysler vehicle in the last 90days. Same window and all parts were genuine Chrysler Chinese dealership parts. Did they pay the labor for me to replace the defective parts? NO!
The difference here is my purchase was under warranty and your wasn't. I'm not interested in union against non-union as they both have their place.
I would suggest that you purchase another RCBS Chinese caliper and really do hope you have good luck with them.
Butch

Thanks for this post. I was on the verge of buying some of their products thinking the price reflected the best I could buy. Any more price is not the indicator of quality it used to be, but rather the most a company can convice someone to pay for their products.

If you think about what you just asked and what has happened in Detroit I think you ccan answer that question. Many people complain about Ford/Chevy/Dodge everyday as well as the foreign vehicles. But when enough people got fed up with the quality and people began to pay a little more for a Honda or Toyota Detroit suffered. I'm no trying to turn this into an attack, once again just making a point of buyer beware. If you bought a barrel for a gun that just flat out didn't shoot even though there is NO warranty I'm sure you'd still be upset about it and possibly sway other away from that brand if you paid a premium price for an average product. That is economics 101. It is when we the consumer don't demand to get our money's worth that we will get screwed. Example: a company charges $20 for their wigit and make it right, they then cut their costs in half and still sell for $20 but the quality is far less. If we the consumer continue to pay $20 for it and their are others out there of now equal quality for $10 then who is to blame? WE ARE, hence why we discuss these things. If I bought a Nightforce scope and got simmons optical quality i'd be a little upset.

Your welcome Otter, I guess the point I should have made here to avoid offending people is that you should check over the warranty thoroughly and not just assume that a "premium" product will have a company that stands behind it. Also don't assume that a company that used to make a great product still does. Heck, Black and Decker use to make some of the best power tools around, now your far more likely to get more life and quality out of a Dewalt or Hitachi, but you will pay more.

Yes they are butch. And unless something has again changed, both are owned by Stanley. It's a pity that greed has driven all of our big name American corporations (who by the way, made their names and fortunes on the backs of American labor) to slave labor countries. The old "you get what you pay for" no longer applies.

The same process has been going on here for a long time. At the end of the day I am just one consumer and my buying choices will change precisely nothing. Frankly I no longer care where anything is made, as long as I get the quality that I pay for. If the best quality was produced domestically (and I could afford it) then I would buy it. If not, then I have no problem helping a poor urban migrant in China, India, or wherever a chance to earn a few dollars a day, as long as they manufacture a good quality product then its fine by me. I draw the line at buying cheap crap from anywhere, UK, USA, Europe or China, mostly I'd rather just do without!

You are correct Butch and that is kinda my point, just didn't spell it out. Same company, different quality of product, if you want to produce throw away stuff then make it cheap and don't put your "high end" name on it. People remember names and expect a quality name to deliver a quality product.
