Standard primer for 338 LM

Hi

I need some help.

As in my country I dont have acess to large rifle magnum primers, is possible to use a small amount of fast pistol powder to help ignite the slow powder in cold conditions?

The caliber is 338 LM . I am thinking to use 0.5 to 1 grains of bullseye.

Is doable?

Thanks

I would not mix powders can cause unsafe condition, also when handling the cases the pistol powder will mix. I would just try the regular primers and see how they work out , probably not much difference in flash just thicker cup on the magnum ;)

What powder are you using, have you tried standard primers or other powders
What speeds are you getting, or how much unburnt powder do you have

Dont mix powders... that can and usually causes a big explosion... ive seen it done. Very dangerous!!

Try to find winchester primers they are the hottest... or just work with standard large rifle primers... but do not mix powders..

I feel cci or remington are the hottest. I use both and can burn 97gr of h1000 no problem. I say those are the hottest because of the high speed camera footage of a primer test done by br shooters i know.

I am no where near as involved or educated as most of the shooters here, but I run CCI BR-2's in my .300 Win Mag with very good results. I would have to agree with the Winchester L/R as they are warm.

It all depend on the temperature you going to shoot in and how fast the burn rate of the powder is.
I shot many of rounds in FL 80 to 90 degree with standard primers .went to Michigan and it was 15 below the shell in the gun wouldn't fire. The ones in my pocket did. Larry

I have used "kicker" charges in the past with good results. I used cigarette papers cut with hole punches tamped in place with a pencil to keep the different powders separate. I always kept the cartridges bullet up in the cases especially when transporting. The powders that I have used have been Bullseye & IMR 4759.
I have tried Large rifle primers & did not have very good results, while others have had excellent results. I would suggest trying every Large rifle primer that you can get your hands on. If nothing works then you can try the .5 grains of Bullseye.
Should every reloader try kicker charges...............No. If you have a mind to & go slow & easy I think it is ok.
