standard or 20moa base?

i have a bushnell 4200 6-24x40SR mildot reticle and 1" tube...these scopes from what i've read don't have as much elevation adjustment as other long range scopes...i think 40MOA.

my question is if i get a 20MOA base then will i be able to zero this particular scope at 200yrds? problem i'm trying to solve with out buying either base first...is after i zero i don't know how much elevation i'll have left and am trying to avoid having to buying both. base i'm planning on buying is EGW and i already have a set of low burris xtreme rings. does anyone have a simular setup they can help shed some light on the subject?

estimated drop to 1000yrds(i've only shot to 400 so far, but bullet drop to their is accurate w/ current load and # listed below)
100+1.1"
200-0
300-5.5"
400-16.2"
500-33"
600-59.6"
700-89.5"
800-132.2"
900-187.5"
1000-257.8"

if my elevation drum is maxed out on low at 200 then i'm thinking i can dial out to atleast 800 without a 20moa base, but like i said i jst don't know if i'll have that much elevation after zero. and with the 20 moa base i don't know if if i can zero at 200.

20 may or may not be too much, if you really want to be able to zero it out with a certain MOA remaining a standard 0 MOA base with Burris Signature Zee Rings with the plastic inserts will allow you to zero in elevation and windage as well as allow you to dial in whatever positive or negative MOA you want.

These: http://www.opticsplanet.net/burris-zee-signature-1-rifle-scope-mount-rings-for-weaver-style-bases.html

Plus these: http://www.opticsplanet.net/burris-signature-pos-align-offset-insert-kits-individual-inserts.html

And you're done for about ~$50 and they grab very hard and won't scratch your scope ever.

Wayne, has the right idea, and it will save you a bunch of money. Plus you wont damage your scope from mounting it with steel rings. There all I use.

Another thumbs up (and a big one at that) for the Burris Signature rings, the only kind I buy since they came on the market. Just too many advantages to not use them. By using the .020 off-set inserts in both the front and rear rings, you can gain a large amount of "click-ups" that are needed for long range distances, very close to what would be added with a tapered base, but with the inserts, they are always changable and if you need it, you can add windage correction also.

I wholheartedly agree on the Burris signature rings. With the 1" you can get the +/-20,but only +/-10s are available for the 30mm tube.Factory told me that the 30mm tubes have so much more adjustment, they felt it wasn't needed.I ran into a situation where I installed Burris bases and Burris 30mm Signature rings on a Savage LRPV .204 bore sighted it and shot it at 55yds.It shot
15-15 inches low.I assumed that even though it was a new scope, someone had probably messed with the elevatioin knob,so I ran it to the stops then counted clicks half way back, and it still shot low.I installed the +/-10 Moa inserts and brought it up 10",adjusting the rest with the scope. That scope and same rings, only higher, will go on a .243AI that is being built,on a Rem 700SA.I will put a Leupols 20MOA one piece base on that, and the Burris Rings are compadable with the Leupold bases,(I think).Although I sent the Savage back to the factory for other issues,I am now wondering if the action isn't warped during heat treating,to put it slightly nose down, just enough to cause that shoot low problem.I shoots sub 1/2 MOA even with factory ammo, and the floating bolt head would take care of any slight misalignment with the rear of the barrel.

i have two of these scopes....one is mounted on rem 700 w/ a ken ferral 0moa base and is almost bottomed out...which is good. this base looks to be taller than the egw i have on my savage 10. it is also a 0moa base, but the elevation turred is about half way up at 200yrd zero. i can see the #2 on the drum...i'm guessing i have roughly 20moa of adjustment left...no way i can get to 1000 w/ this setup, but it doesn't really matter cuz i'm gonna sell this gun. i'm gonna mount the scope thts on it on another rifle...i already have the xtreme rings so all i need to buy is jst the base...hopefully i won't have to mess with the rings any and jst lock it down on new base...this other gun however is another remington 700 so i really don't know how close the different base heights are going from savage-rem. i'm thinking i will be able to zero at 200yrds fine w/ a 20moa base, but jst hoping someone had done the same to give some input. i would like to use zrings w/ inserts, but it would cost me more since i've already got some rings...tthanks in advance for any more info.

Since you need about 26 MOA with your listed dope to get to 1000, you likely will not get there with a standard flat base. If you have 20 MOA Up and 20 Down, you should have no problem getting a 200 yard zero with a 20 MOA base, and Might get very close to a 100 if you have a true 20 down and your rifle shoots a tad high from the receiver centerline.
