Sraping Bullets

Hi
I need some help. When I am loading my 220 swift the case is scraping a small amount of copper off the out side of the bullet when I am seating the bullet.I am using Winchester cases and v max bullets.I have trimmed the cases and full lenght with a redding die.I have also chamfered the inside and outside of the cases.

That full-length die may be giving you more neck tension than you need. This is common with a FL die. Are you running the expander ball?

If you don't want to use the expander ball, you can: 1) Run an .002" under bullet diam. expander mandrel in after FL sizing; 2) have the die honed to reduce the amount of neck diameter reduction.

Also, some chamfer tools are so sharp they'll leave very sharp burrs in the neck after chamfering. I spin my Forster tool in the reverse direction a couple times to smooth the cut and use a little of that green scotch pad stuff to smooth the chamfer.

some of those high BC bullets like a "VLD chamfer", it gives a 25-30 degree chamfer instead of the typical 45 degree one. these are pretty cheap and available all over. I have had much less shaving of bullets since I dropped one of these in my case prep machine.

Luck,

Darrell

I've been reading numerous reports that most any bullet type will benefit greater from a 22 degree VLD chamfer over a standard 45 degree chamfer for just the reason inquired about - half the angle makes for a less bumpy ride for the bullet when sliding across the angled chamfer edge to the straight neck.
