Need powder recommendation for .220 Swift

/VH

Hillary ain't in jail, so leave me to hell alone!
I've been asked by a friend to develop a load for his mod. 70, .220 Swift. He supplied new Winchester cases, CCI BR-2 primers and 55 gr. V - max bullets. With accuracy as the primary consideration, does anyone have a recommendation for a choice of powder that you might care to share? I have no experience with the Swift.

Thanks

Thanks Judd, I actually have a pretty good stock of H4895, H322, XBR and R 15 right now. Do you think it's worthwhile to try any of these? If not, I do have some Varget.

Have shot 39 gr. 4064. & 43 gr. AA 2700. Currently loading 43 gr. IMR 4007SS. Use only 50 gr bullets either Sierra 1330 or Horn. Zombie. Have two Swifts.

IMR 4831 will be one of your best performers with a 55 grain bullet, and is found everywhere. 4007SSC is super with the 55's, but has been discontinued, but if you find some start there. Varget will work but will be slow. IMR 4064 would be my third pick.

Yes, IMR 4320 is good. H414 has been and still is my go to powder for Swift with 55 grain bullets. I have played with IMR-4064 and accuracy is very good but gives up velocity to H414. I like to buzz them at the upper end of the envelope speed wise. Whats the sense of owning a Swift and load to 22-250 levels or use a powder that gets 3700 fps.

IMR 4064 38grs w/55grain will run 3800 in my 220--- 39gr will run 3900 &41gr will run 4100[to hot] at 4100 it the pill goes away blows up beak

For quite a few years I shot the Swift with 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tips. I use 39.0grs of IMR 4895. I was getting 3900f.p.s. with great accuracy..

My Buddy who left the range a few years ago shot a 300 win mag and a 220 swift exclusively and was one of those guys who had a 50 lb keg or old H 4831 long grain powder . He loaded 4831 in both cartridges.

LOL.....I remember when I got my first Swift in the mid 90's. I wasn't big into the whole loading thing and figured I would take the world by storm. At the time I had a Hodgdon manual (26th edition). It pretty much yelled at you to try IMR 4064 with the 50 -55 grain bullet. I was way to smart to listen to any manual!! I must have tried 8 different powders!!

What worked......37 grains IMR 4064 and a 55 grain Balistic tip!!!
