Squirrels anyone?

I usually see three to five in the morning. Christmas morning, there were twelve. Caught seven in this frame. Unfortunately, the spouse and the county says no hunting in the back yard. :rolleyes:View attachment 996735

Democrats waiting to be fed. When the dog goes out, they will start protesting Hillary's loss.

My heard likes sunflower seeds and peanuts.

I have a couple of Live traps,Works great seeing as i don't want to eat them.
There is a wooded lot next to me and when they decide to set up shop in the carport i relocate them to the lake about 15 miles from
here.
6 last year, none this year.Don't leave the traps set over night unless you want to deal with a skunk or the neighbors cat/yappy little dog.

15 last year from my back porch. $100 Beeman 177 from Walmart. Even took the darn thing out west to kill some ground squirrels in Wyoming while waiting for the wife to get ready to go.

Those bummers got into my rafters a few years ago. Mothballs chased them out. 17 cal air gun KEPT them out.

Super Colibri. If you don't start on them you will have them by the hundreds like I do and now I can't make a dent in the population.

maxscm what stock is that? That's a nice rifle.

I grew up squirrel hunting and we ate them. They can be cooked several ways that are very good. I remember my great grandma loved it when we brought her a mess of young squirrels.

I must have seen fifty or more squirrels while deer hunting. Drove me nuts. After deer season ends, we have another month of squirrel. I'm going to break out the HM2 and have some squirrel stew.

Always brown the meat in a hot skillet first then put it in the crock pot. The pan you use to brown the meat makes the BEST gravy! It takes its flavor from the caramelized meat residue in the pan. I do the same thing with pigeons.
Barn pigeons... now that is fun!

THat's pretty much how I do it. 1/4 them up, roll in flour then lightly brown. Put the pieces in the crock pot on low with a can of cream o' mushroom soup on top for 6 or 7 hours.

Ok this calls for some true recipies....
Ok snert I will give you a couple to the best of my memory. My great grandma like so many others of that generation always saved her bacon and sausage grease. And she like to pick all the meat off the young squirrels and fry them in that pork grease. Sometimes she just ate them like that others times she would set it aside and then make her homemade biscuits and gravy and then put the meat in the gravy. Another one from a grandpa on another side of the family was to boil them till they were good and cooked then pull all the meat off and fry them in your favorite extras(onions, garlic, and spices. I later on started picking all the meat off putting it in a pressure cooker cooking it for about 30 mins then put in some taters, carrots, and onions then cook it again. You can get any meat so tender with a pressure cooker. All though I like my great grandmas way best.

Hunter, cut the squirrel up after it has been cleaned, put the whole pieces in the pressure cooker, meat will be close to falling off the bones, then fry. Last batch we made some squirrel salad(like tuna salad). This was delicious!

We have also taken the squirrels out of the pressure cooker, peeled the meat off the bone, then made taco's out of the meat.

That sounds good I will try it as I love cooking in my pressure cooker!

Some of my fondest memories of youth lie here. Squirrel hunting. I learned woodcraft, stealth and marksmanship pursuing these critters. I should make time to do it more.
