Your job is to shoot prairie dogs. It's tough work but someone has to do it.

You have to provide your own equipment.

You have $1,500 to spend on rifle barrels under your accountant's budget.

You could buy...

three select match Shilen
four Douglas
five prefit off-the-shelf standard Shilen
seven E R Shaw
nine factory Savage take-offs
twelve MidwayUSA A&B

Assume all will fit your rifle, e.g., all are prefit for your Savage rifle. Guess they could be different calibers.

What would you rather have your $1,500 invested in to handle your chores ?

Oh, yes, there is no pay for shooting prairie dogs. Again, tough work. The return on investment needs to be maximized.

Thoughts ?

Off the shelf Shilen because you want to hit your target, the ones below that are iffy. Choose a caliber that is cheap to shoot in every way, the 223.
The brass is laying on the ground everywhere, the 22 caliber bullets are cheap and it doesn't take much powder to spit them out. Keep your shots down to 300yds, maybe 400 if there's no wind. The only way cheaper than that is a 22LR.

None of the above, I would buy 1200. dollars worth of posion grain and pay a native american with an atv 300 dollars to put the posion out.

No wait thats what the BLM,Bureau of Land Management)already did.

Never let the bunny huggers accuse you of killing all the p-dogs the BLM kills them by the hundred thousands.

Wazza matta, you using iron sights ;)

.
LOL, The OP was concerned about kills/$1 by the sound of the post. The wind blows 20mph+ here most of the time so 55gr Balistic tips get whipped around at 500. Some days I love the challenge of the long shots and use my 6.5 Reaper,RSAUM) other days I want Vapor up close and use a AR in 5.56x42,SPC)

Buy five factory stainless barrels and have them hand lapped.

Stop over at MidSouthShootersSupply and lay down $460 for 8000 55 gr SP bullets.

If I knew they would all shoot like my factory Savage,I got lucky with a really accurate one), I'd take the Savage. Since that is not likely, I'd take the Shilen Select.
