squeaky clean barrel before a match

Boyd, it's the same rifle you saw me shooting on video. My training day before starts with an uberclean barrel, so 3 foulers and then 3-5 shots at every distance. During a match I am shooting 3 distances. So, confirming my scope adjustments on 3 distances is 15-20 shots in total.
No, the action is not bedded. It does not have to be in a chassis.
IMO unless bedding is proven by being checked with a dial indicator, you are just guessing and hoping, no matter what the manufacturer says. Checking is not hard to do.
There are a number of different ways to set it up. This is just one. It can also be done with a magnetic base setup. I do mine vertically, tilted back toward the forend a bit, based on Jim Borden's recommendation.

That's a great video funny guy too

Edit to add, who is the Smith that did this video?

Wait.
All I'm seeing is, at first, the rifle is moving in the stock. He torques the screw and it's still moving.
He removes the screw and puts it back in and it's not moving.
What changed?

What he showed was barrel/forearm flex, which is not movement within the stock. The forend and the barrel are in effect cantilevered beams that deflect under load. He was showing that the indicator would show movement of one relative to the other. One or both parts were bending not shifting relative to each other. If the bedding had been faulty the indicator would have shown movement from the action being bent with the screw torqued and unbending when it was untorqued, changing the gap between the tip of the stock and the barrel. The indicator can read smaller movements than you can feel by simply placing your finger on the tip of the stock touching the bottom of the barrel, which is the old school test.

Truthfully, everyone should take every shot seriously, every barrel has a cold bore nature and you should know it well... don’t touch that dial .... the man with one gun will get off to a good start simply because he knows what to expect, you can too by noting what you test during a break-in will tell. 99% of my barrels will shoot 1 min low on clean, next shot 1/2 that and so on... just my experience nothing to do other than pay attention... your match results depend on what you know and can do, make the most of everything you understand...

IMHO,
If it takes you,15-20 shots to confirm zeroes, you need more experience. After cleaning, with a well built rifle, zeroes should return quickly, at least to the point you know what they are after a few foulers. You could certainly verify your close (100 yd.?) zero with actual current conditions but the zeroes should remain very close to previous sessions and then every distance beyond that should remain very close.

As a hunter, I zero each rifle after pulling a bore snake through the barrel as this is the only reasonable bore condition I can recreate in the field. My zeroes follow the predicted zeroes out to 600-800 yards quite accurately accounting for other given other conditions.
