Spotting scopes

Need help selecting spotting scope. Newbie here with no experience using spotting scope. Will use for range, prairie dogs, and antelope. Can spend up to $1,000.00. All suggestions, comments welcomed. Thanks

Its not a $1K spotting scope, but I am very happy with the Celestron spotting scope with a 27x ler lens. The long eye relief helps A LOT when using shooting glasses. Or...you can get the 20-60x zoon lens version if you need the variability.

There are A LOT of good ones out there, but IMO, I rather spend the extra money on my reloading components or on the rifle. I bought this, saved up to $500+ and used that money to start another F-Open build.

If you are on a budget, you will like the Vortex Razor HD85 spotting scope. Great value and optics so close to the super expensive scopes that most wont be able to pick the difference.

You'll see the difference in low light for sure.

I owned a Razor, my buddy always has owned Swarovski. I no longer own a Razor because it could not compare at long range and especially low light as I though it would. I now have a Meopta S2 HD 82mm which is the only thing that rivals the mighty Swarovski for a lesser price point IMO. But it still runs aroun $2300 so it's not cheap.

You definitely want an angled scope for range use and its great for extended hunting viewing as well. In that price range, I'd look at one of the Kowa, Pentax, or Celestron models. This is a great website: http://www.optics4birding.com/scopes.aspx

For under $1k, I really like my Viper HD. it isn't a Kowa, and I don't expect it to perform like one, but for my purposes it works great

My vote would be for a vortex razor hd too. I picked up the little 11-33 model and love that thing.
I use it at the range as well as putting it in my backpack when I'm headed to the top of the ridge.

Something to think about though is to get a good tripod to go with it as well.
With out a good tripod, you can have the best glass out there, but not be able
to see anything at higher power when there is a breeze blowing, it's just my $0.02.

if you see a military sniper / spotter they are using the Leupold, take a look at them as they are supueb, not cheep, but around $1300 will get a new one and less used, life time guarantee,

Bob
