Splody Factor V Max verses Blitzking

Ground Squirrel size = 12oz Coke

Prairie Dog size = Quart milk bottle

Maybe I am the cause of the TP shortage;)
I keep all of the TP tubes and use them as “targets” for prairie dogs to check windage and elevation. I figure they are about the size of a spring pup. Standing up is not to difficult. Lay them down flat can be a challenge.

SIEG: I am shooting them in various .223's (bolt and A/R's) with twists ranging from 7 to 12 - mostly 9. Haven't tried the Varmint Grenade in my .22 Nosler yet - but it should be spectacular - as it would in a .22/250, etc.

RMR: Even at a "mere" 500 yards, when the winds blowing (which it usually is), most of us who do have extremely accurate rifles, loads and experience are going to have a pretty tough time getting called head shots and heart shots as you say. At that point - one is simply aiming to hit one. Granted, the large variety of ground squirrels I shoot are a bit smaller than prairie dogs - but not by nearly as much as the "rats" in the Northwest. So if I had to sneak up within a few hundred yards to hit one - seems to be more akin to the Disneyland shooting gallery. No offense intended.

Yah I'm going have to agree on that one.

If you are cold doping head shots at 500 yards with a pdog rifle, you should shoot ELR.

I suppose it could be done similar to the egg shoots they do at 500 under very tame conditions (and most people never hit an egg), but I doubt you are going to be able to do it on the prairie when its 100 degrees and blowing.

your point is extremely valid at long range / windy conditions. past 300y any hit is a good hit on a PD. I'm not any better at this anyone else. :-)

My point was simply that shot placement is more critical than the difference between a Vmax and a varmint grenade. if you have one load that prints 1" at 300 and another load that has "better terminal performance" prints 2" at 300, for me the choice is clear.

Not to argue the point - but some of the most accurate bullets don't splat well- even if they result in a perfect - instantly dead shot. Urbanrifleman

Urbanrifleman, I think, was looking for the best splat bullet. Sometimes it can be the most accurate in a given rifle, though perhaps he, like I, want a bullet that does more than kill with a perfect shot. The same bullet that is very violent and causes great dismemberment is also usually the best to use in not-so-perfect conditions for that same reason. If you "wing" one - instead of having a crawler - it often results in a kill and splat instead. That, I think, is what makes the sintered-core bullets like the Varmint Grenade and the lead-free Ballistic Tips so good. Even a nick in the side usually results in a pretty good blow-up.

Has anyone tried the 50 grain Blitz?

I've shot these in .223Rem. They don't survive 3400fps in a 1:9. Poof in flight. They're accurate, very thin jackets and flat base. They pop water-filled soda cans nicely but have 90% the BC of the 50B'King. The remainder of my Blitzs have been relegated to .22 K-hornet duty where they will make it to the target, lower velocity and slower twist. I don't recommend them for longer distances. FWIW, Sierra states they're for .22 centerfire pistols in their product description.

50 Vmax and 50 BKs pop things very nicely. 50 Ballistic Tips seem to disintegrate less though; better for penetration in larger varmints.

This was my experience on groundhogs. I shot the Nosler 55 at 3900 fps and it would hit a groundhog like you took a full swing at it with a baseball bat.

The Sierra BK when it came out I tried it and it would make exit holes and suck the guts out for 10 feet. So, I stuck to the Nosler as it was more humane.

OK I wanted to give everyone an update.

I shot the 50 Blitzking at 3850 on pdogs last weekend. the blew really good, but I don't think they blow up and better than the 50 TNT for less than half the price.

The 50 TNT will be my pick in the future for 223a.

The 70 TNT in 6mm was also outstanding.

Do not care about splat . If you have ever been in combat and watched one of your guys get badly wounded you will see where i'm coming from. Clean kill on the first shot- period . If I wound and the p dog don't make the hole I shoot until it's dead. It's a very personal thing for me. I shoot a Savage model 12 FV in .223 with a caliber specific Nikon scope. I reload 25 grs of Hodgon Benchmark powder behind a 50 gr Hornaday V Max bullet. Not sure what FPS is but my guess is around 3,300 and 3,400 FPS. Cross hairs set at 200 YDS. Looked at victims of this load at 200 yds. WOW. Looked at victims of this load at 400 yds. WOW . At 75 years old I'm not that good of a shot anymore so I miss a lot over 400 yds. Fair winds and following seas.

Want "Splody"? Speer 50gr TNT. In a 22-250 they blow em high with acrobatics every time.

I have to agree I tested the Sierra blitzking 50 everyone said it was the most explosive but I noted that there was really no difference between br50 TNT and the blitzking and the Speer is less than half the price
