Split lock ring trick

Once I get a die adjusted it stays the same setting for years. No lead removal problem.

I have more than one press so once and a while I have to adjust a die for a different press.
The main problem is when you pick up a die at a gun show or eBay. I've never had a problem with the brass primer anvil! I will never use lead in a set screw hole. I only use that lock ring when it comes with the die.

I got tired of the setscrew-against-the-thread type rings and replaced them all with the split rings. While they are a little more fiddly to lock and unlock, they are quite secure, and have zero chance of marring the die threads.

I have one of those also. LCC. Great press with many good features, one of which is the primer catcher. It keeps all the primer crud off the ram.

that is how It used to work for me but lately it has been locking up on me and I wasn't sure why.

I have used your method for ages. Way back in the dark ages, it didn't take me long to see that squeezing down a "wide open" lock ring was counterproductive. I began snugging down the lock ring first, so that it almost drags on the threads.

I don't understand setting up dies and never changing anything. It seems that I'm always fiddling with die settings. Not a big deal, except I'm just not a set and forget sort of handloader. I should change my handle to Imafiddler, I guess.

Oh. I’ll try never to go ‘off topic’ on his ‘wealth of knowledge ‘ posts.
He’s not the final word, adding another view is valuable.
I guess that ‘air of superiority’ is hard to take and put forth another viewpoint or idea on the exact same subject.
And yes, that method of tightening rings is as old as rings themselves.

Literally tried you suggestion last night and worked like a champ. Has been an irritation for far too long. Great tip.

I think Boyd puts this stuff out there for new people and it’s a good idea because you don’t see it in your loading manual and sometimes it help us old guys been doing it a long time,… your never to old to learn a new method or idea.

We all default to doing things a certain way. It's good to get a new perspective from time to time on even the simple things...like die lock rings.

If you find yourself fiddling with lock rings more that you should, try adding an 'o' ring under the lock ring. It lets the die float and align with the case plus gives a good bit of adjustability w/o loosening the lock ring...two scoops of goodness for 59 cents. By the way, Lee's new split rings have the 'o' ring intergral to the ring...pretty slick.

Boyd is a clever guy that finds all sorts of easy solutions to things and takes the time to share them.
