Speer Gold Dot 22mag test. Another test.

So now the question is if the jeans slowed the slowed the velocity below expansion threshold, or did the tip plug up and prevent hydraulic expansion?

If it was velocity a longer barrel might cure it, if it’s the denim, might be time to try a different bullet.

I enjoy testing bullets, but it’s disappointing how many don’t live up to hype, or just don’t work outside of a narrow perimeter.
I think the highest velocity barrel is like 16”- any longer it slows the bullet down.

“I knew a couple of cops from down Miami way. they were in a dept that was corrupt and left. they went to work in a small town that was industrial property and one trailer park. The had way too much time on their hands, and all of them carried 380s. They had a contest to hand load ammo for the 380s that would go through both sides of a dumpster. All but one ruined a gun or two”

If you watch Assassination Tango" where Robert Duvall is an aging hit man, he shows exactly how to use a mini revolver to put someone down. Very effective. Of course, the rest of the movie stinks. The ammo study is interesting, but I wouldn't want to use a carpet tack hammer to drive a spike.

My suggestion was more that the Speer ammo may need another inch of barrel to expand reliably. Or if it's a poor design with a hollow point that tends to clog and prevent expansion.

The test barrel here was a 1 5/8” unless he changed it. Speer markets the ammo as "maximum performance in barrels as short as 2". This may show why. A wild guess of a 100-150 FPS velocity drop in that 3/8" and impact velocity was below reliable expansion velocity when shot through basic clothing. I did not see where velocity was ever measured, but that would be a good start.

Since that 40 grain bullet probably only has about 100 pounds of energy at the muzzle max in this pistol, it would be nice if it left some behind on its way through the target.

Water is not equal to ballistic gel, gel is not equal to flesh, but it's nice to have some confidence in what you are thinking of using for defense.

I think if I start poppin caps at someone with that little booger , they are gonna go the other way. As I said, not my choice for self defense but better than harsh language.
