Someone else with primer issues....Me!...

Okay I got one for the books here!
I grabbed a piece of old 7-08 federal brass, no idea the number of firings on it. I lost or misplaced my range book and wanted to know my datum length on my Tikka t3 Lite in 7-08 so I f/l sized the brass bumped the shoulder about a .001 loaded my usual load 39.5 gr 2000mr and a Remington 9 1/2 went out and pulled the trigger, went back in loading rm and repeated process but neck sized only, I was using my rockchucker to prime because I was to lazy to load a tray of primers.it took no effort to prime them I repeated this process three more times to make sure I was there and besides it was a small group I had going haha... I took my measurements and wrote them down then remembered not much force to seat primer so I deprimed and put one in it with my fingers, knocked it back out with depriming pin by hand,.... dropped the primer so I looked down and grabbed it went to push it back in and it wouldn’t go?....... it was a federal 210m I had previously dropped..... very sloppy right?... now keep in mind this brass means nothing to me I’m not gonna use it! It just served as a tool the primer pocket is shot no big deal!.... right?.... well I got thinking why does the Remington fall in the pocket and the federal I need the press to put it in and press and depriming die to remove the federal primer.... obviously the answer to the question was the federal primer is bigger right?.....

Now there both brass but the federal is of course nickel plated and the Remington isn’t!.... could that be just hard enough to make the difference?....

actually it is pretty simple.
there is a SPEC for primers,
there is no requirement that they all be the SAME size.
none, just close

rsmithsr50,
Did you see my attached pictures?...
Exactly the same size. I’m aware there not always the same I was a electrician for ATK for 5 years we made all the cups for CCI, Federal and many others but these measured exactly several times on a quality mike just exactly like CCI uses in there quality control in there primer department
Wayne

your mic does not agree with the hole in the brass.

(mic short for MICrometer, different than mike short for Michael)

I’m assuming your making a funny and not teaching me grammar as my iPhone autocorrected mic to Mike but I’m sure you got the drift.......

They're obviously not the same size, and the fact that your mic can't catch it isn't that surprising.

First, be deeply suspicious of measurements finer than 0.001 unless taken in a good metrology lab. Second, your ability to use a gauge (the brass, in this case) significantly exceeds your ability to directly measure; this remains true in almost all situations outside a metrology lab.

This is why we measure to get close, then test-fit to get closer.

Edward,
I guess that makes sense they have to be bigger but it’s funny the mic doesn’t even show .0001 difference, I guess I just thought it odd there was significant noticeable difference in the force it took to seat each primer. Thank you

Could it be that the Remington primer is "perfectly" round and the Federal is slightly oval, and it happened that at the points you measured they were identical?
You know I never gave that a thought it could be a valid point I’ll check that out. Thank you
Wayne

Sry, I'm wrong. "Nick" is correct.

well we should ask rsmithsr50 but technically it’s “Neatnic” but I don’t belong to a proper grammar forum or precision grammar forum it’s a precision shooting forum so I’m good however you spell it and if I don’t understand I’ll ask
Thanks.
Wayne

Not to worry. Nick is Brit slang for either stealing, incarcerated in the nick or being arrested, nicked.
Nothing at all to do with being anal or exceedingly tidy...
Now, now, no need to thank any of us for our enlightening ways.;):D

You should really try the “ignore” function on this site, it’s saved me a lot of grief.
