Some things I have been working on in the shop

I used a Personalizer Plus chemical etcher with a stencil I made to mark the barrel. I was suggested this unit by two other Smith’s and so far it seems to work well. I have only had it for a little over a week. On the subject of rifle building Bob Pastor is the man who taught me how to Chamber & Thread a rifle barrel. If you look at Bob’s shooting accomplishments and the Viper rests he builds Bob knows how to build a custom rifle and is a Top Machinist in my book.

Everything is relative, I would have little problem building a sub 3/8 moa gun on an untrued action with an MTU or other heavy contour, especially in known accurate cartridges, (6br,6.5x47, 308, 6xc, ect.)sure it's possible and very probable. 100% of the time, not likely.

BUT when your looking for extreme accuracy under many different types of rifles it is best to do EVERYTHING in you arsenal of skills to achieve the best possible accuracy. I have built many light /mid-weight hunting rifles that shoot like the above linked picture, 8lb 338 edge (once linked scroll thru to see a pic of the gun.) If that type of accuracy is what your customers are looking for then you will be holding your buisness back by not doing/learning all the skills needed to achieve that level of rifle accuracy.

that page has some groups and pics/testimonials that contain at least 3 remington actioned rifles fully blue-printed that were capable of under .25 moa at 100. One of the most skilled rifle shooters in the country is also pictured holding a sub .265 moa group at 600 yards fired during a br match. (first time Ryan ever fired that rifle)

The same remington actioned 6br rifle, that I won the WI 600 yard state championship with a second day score of 799- 56x a few years ago.

it is tough to accomplish this level of competitiveness with any rifle, let alalone a rifle that did not see every "trick" in the book to make it as consistent and true as possible.

If every gun-smith relied on the opinions of the one who came before him we wouldn't have the innovative rifles and products we do today. Don't hold yourself back your right on the cusp of greatness.

and to go with that post I will post a picture of my greatest disappointment in a 700 build that I did. This customer believed there was no value in a full thread recut. He pad for and got only a skim cut and lap. He was happy with the rifle, but I leave this picture on my web-site as a reminder of what a short cut will become.

I have never, not fully single point recut the internal threads of any 700, after building this rifle.

Ok, I can't read anymore......
First off, nice rifle Dakor.

Second, I think I'm going to refer every thread I see about Savage versus Remington versus Tikka versus Howa etc. thread to this link. One question...If every Remington action is Soooo bad, why the hell do done of you guys brag them up so much and knock every other action? Jeez. Sounds to me like a Remy is the worst machined action in the industry. :o

They all make good ones, they all make bad ones. Dakor built a nice rifle and because he didn't so called "true"/oversize the threads, big deal. It's not a guarantee that it'll make it better.

The big advantages that the Remingtons and their clones have are trigger availability, That alone is really big. They also have the greatest number of stock options, as well as other build accessories. Their shape makes them easy to work on, and easy to bed. No, they are not perfect out of the box. In that category, I would have to say that Savage has an edge (not that either achieve perfection), but if a rifle is being purchased to modify, Remingtons have several advantages.

Randfal, the reason we suggest blueprinting a Remington and not a Savage is because "you can't polish a turd". ;)

LOL. Good one Erik. I just think that enough people got together and came up with a better turd polish for Remingtons.

PS: I'm a closet Savage fan but.... My last rifle build up was a Remy. ;)

That's the reason I went with a Remington for my next build. Better stock availability and you can't put a jewel on a savage.

Thank you.

So I have had the pleasure in the last 25 years or so of shooting and reloading for what I would guess would be around 70 Remington 700's. My dad let me start reloading when I was 11 and I am 36 now and we traded and played with different rifles a lot. If Remington's are so bad I must have been lucky all those years because I have had 1 rifle out of 70ish that I could not get to shoot 3/4 to 1/2 MOA most of them were 1/2 MOA or less and it was a 7mm mag SS bdl and it would only shoot 1 MOA to 1 1/4 MOA not matter what I tried. Now I know there are some great shooters on this forum but I am going to make a statement that a factory Remington when properly bedded in a good stock and has someone that knows how to reload will out shoot 90% of its owners on any given day. Does Remington blue print their action on their 40x? How many matches has a stock 40x won over the years?

For people that think Remington just turns out junk these days. I know of 4 Remington 700 SPS's that will shoot right along side most custom rifles and 2 of them are 7mm mags, 1 a 300 win and the last a 7mm Ultra mag. All were put in an aftermarket stocks and bedded and that was it.

Here is one of those rifles and this 7mm mag can out shoot me on any given day.

That rifle at 1000 yards off the bipod 4 shot group.

Another day at 1000 yards off the bipod.

I have taken this rifle out to 1200 yards on rocks and it still had good accuracy. The other three rifles I mentioned will all shoot like this. So if Remington's are junk from the factory why do so many people use them over other actions like a Winchester? Is someone going to say Winchester actions are junk and are hard to find parts for? My guess would be because overall factory Remington's shoot very well and added things like a custom barrel and a good stock should in theory make them shoot even better.
