Some builds I thought I would share

Here are some builds I have done over the last couple of months I thought I would share.
The first one I call the before and after project. This rifle was an old 30/06 that I turned into a 6.5-284 for myself. Notice the length of pull they added to the stock I could barely even get any sight picture at all through the scope. I had my cousin try look through it who is 6’ 5” and built like a Sasquatch and he even had a hard time getting a sight picture.

The After.

I used the original wood stock and installed a new recoil pad along with pillar bedding it and painting it with a stone finish. I also Cerakoted all the metal and I polished the bolt body. The Receiver was trued and I used a Brux Barrel along with a Sunny Hill recoil lug.

This Build was for my dad and started out as an old 270 that I made into a 6.5-284. I bedded it in a Bell & Carlson stock along with polishing the bolt and Cerakoting all the metal. The Receiver was trued and I used a Brux Barrel along with a Sunny Hill recoil lug.

I also re Cerakoted my 375 Rum that I built last year and polished the bolt body.

Thank you. I mark the barrels with a personalizer plus and stencils.

I did all the work including the barrel work and my turn around time if I have all the parts is 2 to 3 weeks right now so if you would like to talk about a build feel free to shoot me pm. Here is a load from my 6.5-284. I have been short on time so I have not had a chance to shoot it much but I am hoping to stretch its legs this weekend.

I'd like to know more about the etching as to how you got it so deep and the stencils used. That looks pretty deep for a electro etching.

Sure I can go into detail on the etching.

I use stencils from Lectroetch http://www.lectroetch.com/stencils.html I tape the stencil to the barrel with scotch tape and set the unit on the etch mode and apply the etching chemical to the pad. I hold the pad on the stencil and touch the electrode for 2 minutes. I then lift up the stencil and check the depth of the etch and if it is not deep enough I wipe the old chemical off the stencil and barrel and re apply the stencil and I repeat the process.

When I am finished I use the neutralizer and leave some Kroll oil on there so the barrel does not rust. The etching chemical will rust even a stainless barrel if you do not make sure to get it off there. You can rub some steel wool on the marking you just created to help clean up the lettering if needed and blasting also helps with this.

That appears to be huge THREE SHOT group. It doesn't matter if it was shot with a sporter or not, it is far from an "awesome" group.

That appears to be huge THREE SHOT GROUP. It doesn't matter if it was shot with a sported or not, it is far from an "awesome" group.

Looks pretty good to me.

Thank you. The group is a good starting place and I would like to see it down between 1/4 and 1/2 MOA. I just have not had the time to shoot it again is sad as that sounds and when I have had time it has been Gail force winds and there is no point in shooting groups in that but shooting for hits is another story. The first shot on the plate is the one that is high at 1 o'clock the next two are in the black. This was the first time I have ever shot that rifle at this range. This was shot off a Harris Bipod with a rear sandbag. Not my best group at this range but it would have been a dead elk and that is fine with me.

Certainly looks like a capable hunting rig. DOn't know if I'd ever take a shot at an Elk at 1000 yds , but it's always good to have the confidence in the equipment. With any hunting rifle, weight and first shot placement reliability is key.

Nice shooting at over 1000 yds especially with a rifle that you built your self.
My friend that lives in Montana swears by his 375 Ultra mag. He has killed some big bears with it and is his favorite caliber.
How bad does it recoil ? My friend says his punishes him ( stock with skinny factory barrel )
I just finished a custom 375 Ultra mag for him with a # 5 Lilja barrel with just a 2 port brake. I am going to test fire it tomorrow, he uses 260 gr. NAB's with 100 grs of 4831 SC. I have a big benchrest stock to put it in to test fire it.

And my Mom always said; if you can't say anything nice about somebody, DON'T say anything at all !!! And that isn't what I really want to say.

Thanks guys. The recoil without the brake is pretty nasty and after 20 rounds I was done for the day so after about a month of this I tapped out and I put a Holland brake on it. With the brake I would say the recoil is about what a mountain rifle 300 win or 338 win would be without a brake. The 260 Accubond is a great bullet and will hammer game out of that rifle and they seem to shoot well. This rifle is setup for a long range rig so I went with the 350 SMK and that is one beast of a bullet and shoots very well.

I shot it twice today and the recoil wasn't bad at all. It was with 260gr Nosler Partitions ( not accubonds, my mistake ) with 97 grs 4831 SC and it chroned 2971 fps. and 2960 fps. out of a 25 inch Lilja barrel. If I didn't already own a 338 Ultra mag I would consider building a 375 for myself.
Have you got to take any big game with your rifle yet ?
So off to Montana it goes in the morning and I told him I want a pic of him behind a big bear holding that rifle.

I have a 338 rum and I still wanted the 375 rum. I am also looking at building a 375 Saturn my buddy has one and is pushing the 350 SMK at 2916fps from a 27 inch barrel. I was shooting the 350 SMK at 2765fps with IMR-7828 but that powder does not handle the cold very well and I was getting mixed results. I went back to H-4831 and I now shooting the 350 SMK at 2642fps with a 25 3/4 inch barrel. I did not apply out west this year for Elk so I only had a doe tag to fill. I did take a doe and here is the exit from the 350 SMK. The range was around 170 yards.
